The organisation provides services in supported accommodation, supported employment and aged care for over 1200 people. New Horizonsnon-profit commercial packaging service specialises in providing solutions for commercial clients while providing employment for people with a disability.

The organisation's head office is in North Ryde, however services are provided in the Sydney, Central Coast, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Blue Mountains and Northern Rivers regions. New Horizons is growing rapidly, with approximately 520 employees in NSW.

About the Opportunity

New Horizons has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Community Support Worker, Indigenous Male to join its new Post Release Support Program in the Grafton region.

In this role you will be working in a transitional program which aims to reduce and prevent clients from reoffending and to support clients to live independently in the community.

The program consists of a flexible outreach support model, which assists clients in their transition back into their families and the community. It is designed to enable and support the client in the development of a variety of skills inclusive of day to day living, health and self care, accessing community services and facilities and engaging with vocation and/or employment.

New Horizons has formed formal and informal partnerships with several indigenous services in the Clarence which will also support program clients in their goal achievement. In addition, the successful applicant will support a specific male case load complimented by the ability to provide culturally appropriate services.

About You

To join the team as a Community Support Worker, Indigenous Male you will have sound knowledge and understanding of the complexity of Aboriginal traditional culture and history, and the impact that culture including social and emotional issues and history has on the provision of health services to Aboriginal clients. This will compliment your experience supporting people in the community, ideally in the criminal justice system. In this position an applicant's race and gender are genuine occupational qualifications, as authorised by section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1997, as amended.

New Horizons is seeking an empathetic individual, with extensive experience in disabilities or mental health and complimentary skills in personal support, social and community welfare or similar. This is a pivotal 'hands on' roles and accordingly you will have the ability to communicate effectively with vulnerable people, to solve problems, to manage and organise your time efficiently and to build and maintain collaborative relationships. You will need both the ability to work effectively in a small team, and the ability to work unsupervised.

To succeed you will have completed qualifications in either Disability, Mental Health, Social Work, Community Welfare, Community Development or Counselling. You will need general administration abilities and able to demonstrate a basic level of computer literacy, complimented by an understanding of the Disability Service Standards and/or Mental Health Standards will be vital. An enthusiasm for working with people with disability and a genuine desire to help others and improve the quality of life is essential!

Employment in this position is subject to a satisfactory Criminal Record check.
