About the Opportunity

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service has a unique opportunity for an Aboriginal Health Worker with a focus on Sexual Health to join its dedicated, passionate team in Bourke, NSW.

Within this varied role, you will assist in the delivery of holistic and culturally appropraite Sexual Health Care Programs that ensure Aboriginal people living in the Bourke area and Shire receive relevant sexual health care, support, education, advice, information and assistance.

This is a role in which the successful applicant must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification for this position, as authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.

Some of your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Assisting to establish and deliver programs of early intervention as a quality service oriented towards the earliest possible and most effective form of preventative health care for Aboriginal people;
  • Supporting the case management of each client from the point of first contact and when necessary referring to further ongoing professional assessment;
  • Providing advice and support to BAHS staff about issues facing Aboriginal individuals and communities around sexual and reproductive health;
  • Advocating for increased access to relevant health and community services for Aboriginal individuals wanting to access sexual health treatment;
  • Developing and providing culturally appropriate educational information and resource material;
  • Recommending, organising and delivering relevant in-house training to BAHS staff; and
  • Providing timesheets, diary of duties, monthly and yearly reports and statistical and other records as required.

This is an exciting opportunity to become a vital part of a holistic and culturally appropriate health care program that ensures Aboriginal people living in the Bourke area and Shire receive health care, support, education, advice, information and assistance.

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service is seeking a candidate with relevant qualifications in Aboriginal Primary Health Care - Sexual Health, or a related field (e.g. Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse), plus experience working in the primary health care field. You will also require a demonstrated understanding of current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with regard to sexual and reproductive health. Knowledge and understanding of infection control and quality assurance will be advantageous.
