About the Opportunity

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service has a unique opportunity for an Aboriginal Health Worker with a focus on Chronic Disease & Maternal Health to join its dedicated, passionate team in Bourke, NSW.

Working under the banner of the Health For Life program, the main aim of this varied position is to deliver public and clinical health services in an in-the-field environment, and with a holistic primary health care focus. You will develop the capacity of the BAHS and other service providers to respond effectively to the needs of Aboriginal families within Bourke's communities in the area of chronic disease and child and maternal health.

This is a role in which the successful applicant must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification for this position, as authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW.

Some of your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Initial detection of possible medical conditions through screening of clients;
  • Carrying out permitted treatment and emergency minor procedures;
  • Monitoring clients after care and in 'at risk' situations;
  • Supporting other community health workers and health worker specialists in service delivery;
  • Identifying service gaps and assisting with the introduction of new screening, education or clinical programs within the community; and
  • Under the direction of the Practice/Primary Health Nurse Manager, giving reports and interviews to the local media.

This is an exciting opportunity to become a vital part of a holistic and culturally appropriate health care program that ensures Aboriginal people living in the Bourke area and Shire receive health care, support, education, advice, information and assistance.

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service is seeking a candidate with relevant qualifications in Aboriginal Primary Health Care, or as an Aboriginal Registered Nurse or Aboriginal Enrolled Nurse, plus experience working in the Aboriginal Health field, preferably in a remote or rural setting. You will also require a demonstrated understanding of current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with regard to chronic diseases and child and maternal health.

Additional requirements include a current driver's licence, up-to-date first aid and CPR certificate, health check, criminal history check and 'working with children' clearance.

The successful applicant will be rewarded with an attractive salary circa $814.60 - $1,101.60 per week, commensurate with your experience and qualifications.
