About the Opportunity

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service has a unique opportunity for a Regional Eye Health Coordinator to join its dedicated, passionate team in Bourke, NSW.

The successful candidate will deliver and coordinate a holistic and culturally appropriate Eye Health Program that ensures the Aboriginal people living in the Bourke, Brewarrinna and Cobar Shires receive eye health care, support, advice, information and assistance.

As part of the Health Team, you will coordinate, establish and deliver a program of early intervention services, clinical sessions and support theatre admissions. An advisory committee has been set up to act as a guide and valuable network for the successful candidate.

Some of your specific responsibilities will include:

  • Acting as a facilitator between Aboriginal people and visiting specialists at a community level, and assisting with the follow-up of patient treatment;
  • Effectively carrying out Eye Care Screening programs in individual communities;
  • Identifying needs and developing strategies to improve access for Aboriginal people to screening and treatment services in eye health;
  • Identifying referral networks of specialist medical services;
  • Identifying eye health service gaps and assisting with the introduction of new screening, education or clinical programs within the community; and
  • Being prepare to travel to deliver Eye Care Early Detection Clinics and Education Programs.

This is an exciting opportunity to become a vital part of a holistic and culturally appropriate health care program that ensures Aboriginal people living in the Bourke area and Shire receive health care, support, education, advice, information and assistance.

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service is seeking a candidate with relevant qualifications in a senior medical field, such as Registered Nurse, Enrolled Nurse Level 4 or Senior Aboriginal Health Worker with proven coordination experience. You will possess a thorough knowledge of Aboriginal health with an interest in eye health care and diabetes in Aboriginal people. You will also require a demonstrated understanding of health and social issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary society, and in the diversity of their circumstances.

You will demonstrate excellent communication and listening skills with a commitment to non-discriminatory workplace practices.

Additional requirements include a current driver's licence, up-to-date first aid and CPR certificate, criminal history check, and 'working with children' clearance.

The successful applicant will be rewarded with an attractive salary circa $890.50 - $1,101.60 per week for Nurses, or $814.60 - $944.10 per week for Aboriginal Health Workers, commensurate with your experience and qualifications. You will receive a full orientation upon arrival, and will receive ongoing professional training with an organisation that actively supports your career development.
