About the Organisation
The Migrant Women’s Emergency Support Service (MWESS) Inc. T/AS Immigrant Women’s Support Service (IWSS) is a community-based crisis and support service which aims to advocate for the elimination of domestic violence and sexual assault amongst non-English speaking background communities throughout Queensland. They provide culturally appropriate support, information, short-term counselling and referral.
IWSS works from within a feminist framework which values cultural diversity and recognises the disadvantages faced by women and children of non-English speaking backgrounds which arise from the structural inequalities existing in society.
They are funded by the Commonwealth and State Governments and have adopted Section 25 of the Anti Discrimination Act 1991, which enables the employment of women only on the basis of ‘genuine occupational requirements’.
About the Opportunity
The Migrant Women’s Emergency Support Service (MWESS) Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a creative and innovative Director to lead its dedicated team at West End, Brisbane.
The primary purpose of this role will be to lead change in sector responsiveness to migrant, refuge & non-English speaking communities and manage and strengthen the day-to-day responsibilities of the support service.

More specifically, some of your duties will include:
- Optimising the effective management and coordination of the service including accountability and financial administration;
- Developing and monitoring strategic and operational planning;
- Providing high level financial, professional and policy advice to the Management Committee;
- Ensuring the effective management and accountability of staff including annual appraisal of the performance of all staff;
- Developing annual and quarterly budgeting for consideration;
- Ensuring the agency profile and credibility is enhanced through education and training; and
- Link and liaise with relevant local, state and national organisations addressing domestic violence.
To be successful in this position you will require relevant tertiary qualifications in human services, social or political science or equivalent as well as substantial experience in the management and operations of a specialist non-government organisation. You will also require experience working with people from diverse cultural, linguistic and socio-economic backgrounds and ages.
A well developed knowledge of legislation and infrastructure regarding domestic violence and sexual assault is essential as is an understanding of governance responsibilities of non-government agencies. You will be a pro-active and dynamic leader with excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work effectively across a range of stakeholders.
Although not essential, a current driver's licence and the ability to speak another language in addition to English would be highly regarded.
