About the Opportunity
Bourke Aboriginal Health Service has a unique opportunity for an Aboriginal Youth Support Worker with a focus on Alcohol & Other Drugs to join its dedicated team in Bourke, NSW.
Within this varied role, you will take an active role in developing the capacity of the BAHS and other service providers to respond effectively to the needs of the Aboriginal young people and their communities experiencing problems with substance misuse.
Please note: This is a role in which the successful applicant must be of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent. An applicant's race is a genuine occupational qualification for this position, as authorised under Section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977, NSW. (Proof in writing of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander descent that has been passed by a resolution at a Board meeting by an Aboriginal Incorporated Organisation will be required).
Some of your specific responsibilities will include:
- Helping to identify and qualify local youth health needs, and improving service delivery to the youth of Bourke in the area of substance misuse;
- Supporting the development of strategies to help prevent substance misuse problems within the youth community;
- Advocating for the delivery of enhanced alcohol and other drug services in the region including improved access to culturally appropriate treatment, detoxification and rehabilitation services;
- Providing alcohol and other drug services and support to the youth of Bourke with complex life issues and who present with at risk behaviour;
- Liaising with relevant community organisations, support workers and individuals in relation to the case management, crisis and protective interventions of the group; and
- Providing up to date information regarding youth AOD Health Care trends in the local region.

Bourke Aboriginal Health Service is seeking a candidate with significant experience as a Youth Worker or an Alcohol & Other Drugs Worker, with the proven ability to relate to youth in the community. It is preferred you hold a Degree or Certificate IV in Primary Health Care. Your background will involve providing assessments, interventions, group facilitation and support to young people and others, utilising a range of activity based and/or therapeutic interventions. You will also require a demonstrated understanding of current issues facing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with regard to substance misuse.
Substantial experience in working with young people with challenging behaviours is important, as is the ability to provide interventions that maximise a young person's strengths, capabilities and integrity in an empathetic and non-judgemental manner.
Candidates must have the flexibility to occasionally travel away from home for outreach services for 1-3 days. Additional requirements include a current driver's licence, up-to-date first aid and CPR certificates, criminal history check, and 'Working with Children' clearance.
The successful applicant will be rewarded with an attractive salary circa $42,000 to $50,000, commensurate with your experience and qualifications, plus super.
