About the Opportunity

If you have a talent for working with young people who exhibit challenging behaviours, Premier Youthworks has exciting full-time opportunities for a number of Residential Care Workers to join their dedicated team in Canberra.

Reporting to the ACT Management Team, the purpose of these positions is to assist in providing 24 hour care in a highly structured residential setting for children and young people who require intensive needs support. You will work to individualised case plans and under supervision to provide quality, planned care and support.

The young people placed in this service will be Departmental clients who may have a long history of disrupted placements, and will have some or all of the following behaviours: poor self image, poor socialisation, educational difficulties, anti-social behaviours, suicidal tendencies, history of physically/sexually violent behaviour, inappropriate sexual behaviour, difficulties in controlling their behaviours, substance abuse, emotional problems, mental health issues.

More specifically, your duties will include:

  • Ensuring children and young people are treated with dignity and respect at all times;
  • Providing appropriate role modelling for young people, and building and maintaining an appropriate and professional working relationship;
  • Engaging in age-appropriate and positive activities with young people and discouraging clients from antisocial behaviours;
  • Seeking medical treatment for the young person when required;
  • Maintaining accurate and up to date records as required by Management;
  • Transporting young people to appointments safely and legally;
  • Liaising with Departmental Caseworkers and other agencies as required;
  • Supporting clients through their educational programs; and
  • Assisting young people with independent living skills.

The successful applicants will have demonstrated experience working with children, young people and their families, preferably in an Out of Home Care environment, while relevant qualifications in Youth Work, Social Work, Education or another relevant discipline will be highly regarded. Knowledge and understanding of trauma and abuse, child and adolescent mental health, disability, alcohol and other drug-related issues is preferred.

Importantly, you will be an enthusiastic, caring and understanding team player, with strong written and verbal communication skills, computer literacy and significant abilities in conflict resolution and mediation. You will be a tolerant person with the ability to confidently make effective decisions, and solve problems under pressure.

All applicants require a current driver's licence.  Before commencement, you will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check, a Working With Children Check and a pre-employment medical.

You will work an average of 3.5 shifts per week in this sliding roster, involving 2 days and 2 nights per week, followed by 4 days off.
