About the Organisation

Nganampa Health Council is an Aboriginal owned and controlled health organisation operating on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands in the far north west of South Australia. Across this area, Nganampa Health operates eight clinics, a 16 bed aged care respite facility and assorted health related programs including aged care, sexual health, environmental health, health worker training, dental, women's health, male health, children's health and mental health.

The health service has a sustained national reputation for best practice clinical services, leading edge collaborative program research and development and for the collection of outcome data as a basis for ongoing evaluation. The organisation's clinics are AGPAL Accredited, modern facilities staffed by a multidisciplinary team comprising Anangu Health Workers and Nurses, supported by Program Coordinators and experienced Medical Officers to provide clinical care to each local community.

Nganampa Health Council is widely recognised as being the exemplar Aboriginal health service in the country. Their successes include significantly reducing the rates of sexually transmitted infections, increasing birth weights through their antenatal program and consistently keeping childhood immunisation rates at 100%.  Their Tjilpiku Pampaku Ngura aged care facility is also being recognised as the best remote area aged care facility in the country.

 The Organisation was awarded the Infanrix Immunisation Award in 2006,  and their work has since been commended around the country by health commissions, the Australian Medical Journal and former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.

Life in the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands

The Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands are located in the far north-western region of South Australia. It covers approximately 103,000 sq km with a population of approximately 3,000 Anangu people. The region is freehold land controlled by the Anangu people.

About the Opportunities

As a General Practitioner, you will work as part of the regional clinical team, under the direction of the Medical Director to deliver comprehensive primary health care to Aboriginal people living in the communities of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.

In this varied role you will work in a highly organised, well resourced, and best practice environment where you can be sure your health checks and treatment plans are followed through.

More specifically, some of your responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Acting in consultation with Registered Nurses and other health staff in the diagnosis and treatment of clients;
  • Adhering to the protocolised assessment and care specified in the CARPA Standard Treatment Manual and the Women’s Business Manual;
  • Providing direction, consultation and professional support and development for Registered Nurses and Anangu Health Workers in the clinical assessment and management of clients;
  • Undertaking active management and surveillance of chronic disease and involvement in adult health checks;
  • Provide clinical leadership of the multidisciplinary clinic health care team, through a strong regular “hands on” clinical presence in the clinic;
  • Working closely with visiting specialists and Nganampa Health Council Program staff in the delivery of clinical care;
  • Working in close consultation with the Medical Director and other Medical Officers in the health service; and
  • Actively participating in the organisation’s Medicare bulk billing procedures and processes.

To be considered for these positions, you must be a qualified General Practitioner/ Medical Officer, with current registration in South Australia, or eligibility to apply. You will be willing to participate in out of hours consultation and provide assistance to other team members when required.

Nganampa Health Council is seeking adaptable and flexible individuals who can display the initiative, discretion and cultural sensitivity needed to support and drive the organisation's objectives and values. The ability to communicate and participate effectively within a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary health team is essential.

You will have a commitment to improving health care and health outcomes in remote Aboriginal communities, combined with an understanding of the issues currently affecting Aborginal health and the principles of Primary Health Care.

Candidates who are open to change, accepting of Aboriginal people, comfortable living in a remote environment and who are willing to learn the ways of the people will be best suited to this position. The ability to work under Aboriginal management and control will be highly regarded. No two days will be the same and as a result, highly resourceful candidates will thrive here.
