About the Opportunity

Centacare has an excellent opportunity for full time a Counsellor to join their team in Mt Isa.

In this role, you will provide counselling using a range of strategies through the programs/services offered by Centacare.

Some of your key responsibilities will include:

  • Undertake counselling to families/children/individuals using approaches that are flexible and appropriate to the program requirements;
  • Contribute to the planning and provision of community education and support as per program requirements;
  • Conduct assessments of clients and make appropriate referrals as necessary;
  • Maintain appropriate files, records and complete other required documentation within agency guidelines;
  • Participate in internal and external meetings, and represent and promote Centacare in the wider community; and
  • Actively participate in the process of professional supervision, and contribute towards the organisational culture of continuous improvement.

Centacare is seeking candidates who hold a tertiary degree in Psychology, Social Work or Behavioural Sciences, and a membership (or eligibility for membership) of a relevant professional association.

To succeed, you will need the demonstrated ability to utilise different theoretical frameworks, counselling approaches and experience relevant to interventions involving families and relationships, domestic violence, suicide, substance abuse, gambling, depression, anxiety, family functioning, culturally diverse groups, children and young people and children and families where harm has occurred to the child.

In addition, you will require an understanding of and an ability to articulate social issues that may impact on individuals, families and young people, in particular those social issues that directly impact on the indigenous community. As such, highly developed written and verbal communication skills, in order to effectively work with culturally diverse groups, are essential, as is the demonstrated ability to work as part of a team to fulfill the program and organisational goals. Experience or the ability to acquire skills in community education or group work will also be well regarded.

You will require a current driver's licence, and must have, or be willing to obtain, a Positive Notice for Child Related Employment from the Commission for Children, Young People and Child Guardian.
