About the Organisation
WAYSS is a community based organisation which was formed as a result of the amalgamation of several small incorporated associations. It is WAYSS core purpose to assist individuals who are homeless or at risk of homelessness to improve their life circumstances by providing access to stable, affordable and safe accommodation. WAYSS exists to serve those in the community who are experiencing difficulties by offering support and advocacy to alleviate homelessness and re-establish connections and links in the community.
Many of WAYSS services have been in operation since the late 1970's. Its membership consists of individuals who live or work in the outer south eastern region of Melbourne and are committed to the provision of services to those at risk of homelessness. WAYSS aims to provide the best service possible within available resources. All staff are professionally trained and/or hold relevant tertiary qualifications.
About the Opportunity
WAYSS has an exciting full-time opportunity for a Case Worker to join their dedicated Indigenous Tenants At Risk Program team. Working approximately 70 hours per fortnight, you may be required to across multiple WAYSS locations, including Dandenong, Narre Warren, Pakenham, Frankston and Cranbourne.
Reporting to the Social Housing Advocacy and Support Program Coordinator, you aims will be ensuring that the most appropriate and effective services are provided and assisting participants in obtaining the skills and abilities necessary to establish and maintain independent accommodation.
More specifically, your duties will include:
- Providing client-focused, limited case managed support to tenants accommodated in Office of Housing or Aboriginal Housing Victoria managed properties;
- Assessing the client's situation and safety requirements through informed and confidential discussion;
- Informing the client of appropriate options and empowering them to make decisions, which will enable them to move towards independence and security;
- Ensuring that the client is informed of all resources/services available through WAYSS programs and that client pathways to these are provided;
- Referring, liaising and supporting the client and accompanying family members in accessing appropriate services;
- Advocating and liaising, in conjunction with the client, in their dealings with other workers, agencies, services and other jurisdictions; and
- Developing working relationships with Indigenous service providers and promoting the Indigenous Tenants At Risk program within the local communities.
The successful applicant will have relevant qualifications or equivalent experience within the housing and homelessness sector, complimented by a knowledge of the current theory and practice relating to transitional and social housing and the Residential Tenancies Act. You will have a strong knowledge of the principles, practice and implementation of case management frameworks, with a demonstrated understanding of both Indigenous culture and service provision and the Office of Housing and Aboriginal Housing Victoria application procedure.
To be considered, you should display demonstrated experience, understanding and commitment to the social and political context of homelessness and the delivery of quality services to the community. A demonstrated understanding of community development models and practice is also essential.
Importantly, you will be an enthusiastic, caring and understanding individual, with strong written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills, computer literacy in Microsoft Office and skills in conflict resolution and mediation. You will be a tolerant customer-orientated person with the ability to confidently liaise with stakeholders and people of different backgrounds, with the ability to make effective decisions and solve problems under pressure.
All applicants require a current Victorian driver's licence, and before commencement you will be required to undertake a Criminal Record Check and a Working With Children Check.
