About the Organisation

Ngaanyatjarra Media is a thriving Indigenous-owned media organisation supporting 14 remote Aboriginal communities in the Western Desert region of Western Australia. Ngaanyatjarra Media programs include training in and production of radio and film, music development, archiving, language recording, IT, and technical broadcasting services.

Yarnangu (Aboriginal people of the region) are using modern media and communications technologies in ways that are meaningful and relevant to their rapidly evolving culture, and to tell their own stories using their own voice. Ngaanyatjarra Media also works with Yarnangu to preserve their cultural heritage through the recording of traditional songs, dances and stories.

Ngaanyatjarra Media is based in their superbly equipped multi-million dollar Media Centre in Wingellina Community.  It is the only service provider of its kind in the region and has grown substantially over the last ten years through the extension of programs and the growing demand for its services and products. The organisation has a strong history of Yarnangu ownership and participation in its programs, and has a good knowledge of community needs and aspirations.

About the Region

The Ngaanyatjarra Lands are at the junction of the Great Victoria and Gibson deserts, in the far east of Western Australia, adjoining the Northern Territory and South Australia borders. This area spans over 250,000 sq/kms with a population of over 2,000 people living in 15 communities.

The landscape of the Ngaanyatjarra Lands is extremely diverse; there is dense sand dune country, mountain ranges and vast spinifex plains. Among the overwhelming scale of the landscape are the rockholes, soakwaters (underground water), creeks, salt lakes and claypans that feature in many local artworks and traditional stories as sites of significance.

Wingellina, where this position is based, is a small remote Aboriginal community with a population of approximately 150. It is situated 12km from the tri-state border (WA-NT-SA), 850kms South-West of Alice Springs. The Ngaanyatjarra Lands, including Wingellina, are “dry” (no alcohol permitted).
