About the Organisation
As a non-profit government funded community organisation, the Cairns Community Legal Centre strives to make a real difference in the lives of the socially and financially disadvantaged.
The Centre provides free legal and referral services to the benefit of members of the community ranging from their core service to disability discrimination, seniors support, family law and consumer law services. Their qualified practitioners provide legal advice, information and referrals, along with community education and some law reform and social policy work.
The Centre is available to people who live in Cairns and Far North Queensland and is funded by a variety of sources including the Commonwealth and State Governments, the QLD Department of Communities and the Commonwealth Attorney General's Department. The Consumer Law Service is specifically funded by the Legal Practitioner's Interest on Trust Account Fund and is one of two pilot programs in Queensland.
About the Opportunity
A position has recently opened with Cairns Community Legal Centre for a dedicated Consumer Law Service Solicitor to join their team.
In this pivotal role, you'll be required to provide sound and accurate legal advice regarding information and referrals, casework, community education and law reform work. Your primary focus will be providing daily advice and casework services to the socially and financially disadvantaged.
Working as part of the Consumer Law Service, you'll specifically be handling enquiries relating to consumer credit, product dispute, service disputes, debt matters and bankruptcy. This will involve liaison with insurance companies, brokers, banks, superannuation trustee, telecommunication providers, car dealers and sellers of consumer goods and services.
This may include undertaking the following key duties:
- Providing advice and casework on a daily basis;
- Community Education work;
- Identifying and undertaking law reform and social policy work;
- Establishing and maintaining links with relevant networks and organisations; and
- Undertaking research, reporting and various administration as needed.
The successful applicant will be a passionate lawyer, preferably with a minimum of 6 months post admission experience. Experience in the area of consumer law is desirable but not essential. You'll have strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, along with the ability to effectively manage your time and competing priorities. You'll also be a strong team player.

In return for your dedication and hard work, you will receive an attractive remuneration circa $53,645 to $72,948 pa gross (part time - pro rata), commensurate with your skills and experience. You will also benefit from time off in lieu and if you are eligible employee salary sacrifice options will be available to further increase your take-home pay as well!
