About the Opportunity

Goulburn Mulwaree Council has an exciting opportunity for a Development Assessment Officer to join their dynamic team in Goulburn.

Working as part of the Planning & Community Services team, and reporting to the Manager Development Control and Principal Development Control Officer, your primary aim will be to assess development applications against relevant planning provisions and policies.

More specifically, some of your duties may include (but are not limited to):

  • Assess development applications for registration, development applications against relevant planning provisions and policies, and applications for modification to consent;
  • Issue Development Consents & Modifications, Construction Certificates and Subdivision Certificates;
  • Inspect developments for compliance as required, and investigate complaints and prepare reports for actions in relation to development under consent;
  • Assist in the review of development assessment procedures and development determination conditions;
  • Provide advice and assistance to customers on development and planning matters;
  • Assist the Strategic Planning team in the preparation of statutory and strategic planning policies and documents as required;
  • Participate in committee meetings, conducting presentations and assist in forums to educate developers, builders and ratepayers; and
  • Participate and assist in departmental meetings and reviews of procedures.

To be successful in this role, you will possess (or currently be undertaking) a Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree qualification in a Town Planning related discipline. As such, you will also need to to be eligible to gain membership to the Planning Institute of Australia, or equivalent.

The ideal candidate will have a sound knowledge of planning legislation, with experience in the assessment of development applications and/or construction certificates, and an understanding of both the Building Code of Australia and the Certification process.

In addition, you will possess exceptional customer service skills, highly developed verbal and written communication skills and strong computer skills.

A current C Class drivers licence is essential in this role, and whilst not necessary, previous local government experience in a similar role will be well regarded.
