About the Opportunity

As part of their expansion across Victoria, Life Without Barriers has opportunities for three Cultural Support Coordinators to join their Immigration Services teams in Melbourne.

More specifically, the two roles will be:

  • Full Time (38 hours per week) - based in Cranbourne, covering Southern region of Melbourne
  • Part Time (15 hours per week) - based in Eltham, covering Northern region of Melbourne
  • Full Time (38 hours per week) - primarily based in Hepburn Springs, covering the region north of Melbourne

These are highly challenging and rewarding roles, managing the teams providing support and care to young, recently arrived asylum seekers and refugees. As a leader within Immigration Services, you'll be coordinating the staff and programs that ensure Unaccompanied Minors (UAMs) in detention are provided with a culturally, spiritually and linguistically-appropriate home-like environment.

Some of your more specific duties will include:

  • Supervising and coordinating the day-to-day care and support of UAMs to ensure their wellbeing and effectively address any changes in circumstances;
  • Developing and implementing programs for UAMs, including needs assessment, review and the development of transition plans and associated documentation;
  • Providing skill development to UAMs including English language skills, self care skills and independent living skills;
  • Ensuring that documentation is completed within designated timeframes and meets legislative and organisational requirements;
  • Maintaining up-to-date client files and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards;
  • Applying culturally appropriate client engagement principles and processes to ensure that the voice of children and young people is heard in planning and implementing their care; and
  • Working collaboratively with UAMs, Cultural Support Workers, Department of Immigration and Citizenship, SERCO, local schools, sporting and recreational groups, and other key stakeholders in order to meet the needs of UAMs.

The successful applicants will have demonstrated experience in developing and implementing programs for children and young people to assist their independent living capacity and integration into the community. It's essential that this specifically includes experience working with traumatised children and young people from a range of cultures, from a child-centred and strengths-based perspective. You'll need to hold tertiary qualifications in Social Work, Youth Work, Community Services or similar, and will preferably have history in a relevant Case Worker role. Sound knowledge of current legislation and service agreements pertaining to children and young people relating to the immigration process is required.

Life Without Barriers is looking for a highly motivated leader with demonstrated skills in prioritising and organising the work of your team members in order to focus on the core issues and goals of the program. You'll have well developed skills in assessment, care planning, problems solving and documentation, as well as outstanding interpersonal and communication skills. You'll be a well practiced team player whose behaviour models calmly adapting to changing situations, and thriving in a fast-paced environment. Familiarity with Windows and the Microsoft Office suite is required, and all applicants must hold a current driver's licence. You will be required to undergo a criminal record check and working with children check before commencement.

You can choose which location/hours you'd prefer, but in both roles, you will need to travel throughout the Melbourne metro area, and have the flexibility to perform some on-call duties. Your working hours will come with a high degree of flexibility to acknowledge this on-call requirement, as well as to suit your lifestyle and out-of-work commitments.

You'll be joining a highly respected and award-winning national organisation, with particular attention on expanding its Victorian services. Joining the Immigration Services team, you'll be welcomed into a close-knit team environment that encourages staff to provide feedback to management.

The organisation strongly encourages all staff to take advantage of comprehensive ongoing training opportunities, so you will continue to develop your career.

The successful applicants will be rewarded with an attractive remuneration package plus salary sacrifice options, and benefits including a vehicle, laptop and mobile phone.
