About the Opportunity
Goulburn Mulwaree Council has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Accountant to join their dynamic team in Goulburn.
Working as part of the Corporate Services team, and reporting to the Manager - Financial Services, you will provide financial advice, prepare financial statements, reports and plans and assist in the implementation of good accounting practice, systems and analysis of performance across the organisation.
More specifically, some of your duties may include (but are not limited to):
- Analyse actual expenditure and income against budget, and prepare and import original and revised budgets;
- Create work order numbers as per adopted management plan and maintain throughout the year;
- Assist with maintaining Council’s main financial asset register;
- Provide assistance to the Manager – Financial Services on the changes and implications of Commonwealth and State legislation, rulings and policies on Council’s operations and financial and statutory obligations;
- Prepare Council’s annual financial statements, interim financial statements, and other financial returns and management reports required by Government Departments and/or Council;
- Prepare Council’s annual budget and management plan, compile statistics for analysis and reporting purposes, and prepare quarterly budget review reports for Council;
- Provide training and guidance to staff in relation to the accounting functions and systems;
- Monitor internal control procedures for audit purposes, and ensure Council’s accounting functions are operating effectively and in a timely manner.
To be successful in this role, you will need to possess a tertiary qualification in Accounting or similar, along with relevant work experience in Local Government accounting related activities. You will also need high level financial skills, including demonstrated abilities in the use of technology systems, the preparation of budgets and business plans, and the monitoring, analysis and reporting of results. In addition, you will require a working knowledge of Australian Accounting Standards Board Standards, GST and FBT legislation, and accounting concepts.
Along with excellent customer service skills, you'll need the ability to review systems, processes and procedures along with implementing best practice approaches. You'll be an innovative and motivated individual who can provide quality work while still adhering to time frames and deadlines.
Although not essential, relevant post graduate qualifications, a knowledge of council legislative, statutory and regulatory environments (along with government asset management) would be highly desirable. Experience in the use of Technology 1 software systems would also be advantageous.
