About the Opportunity

The Shire of Halls Creek has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Economic Development Officer to join their dedicated Halls Creek team.

Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, in this action and asset focused role, you will support the creation, development and expansion of successful and sustainable businesses in the Halls Creek community and the wider region.

More specifically, your responsibilities will include but are not limited to:

  • Identifying current and possible future business and self-employment opportunities in the Halls Creek district;
  • Assisting people to work and formalise their business ideas through appropriate business plans and relevant information;
  • Facilitating access to business finance, information, training and mentoring opportunities and workshops including one on one mentoring partnerships;
  • Encouraging and facilitating the involvement of business, industry and financial agencies within Indigenous small business;
  • Working collaboratively with other supports such as Indigenous Business Australia (IBA), Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC), Regional Development Councils, Non-Government Organisations and Chambers of Commerce and Industry;
  • Ensuring all documents relating to economic development are registered and managed in accordance with the Document Management Plan; and
  • Providing feedback to entrepreneurs.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated experience in a similar position, or a substantial background in successful business orientated entrepreneurial activities along with a sound knowledge of small business and commercial principles and experience in the development and expansion of business opportunities.

Your practical knowledge of commercial development and business practices along with your understanding of processes and legislation, policies and strategies relevant to Local Government is essential. Additionally you will require a good awareness and understanding of the issues that impact on the economic independence of Indigenous Australians.

You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to work with diverse individuals and groups in a cross-cultural environment. Your skills in graphic communication, research and reporting writing, training and mentoring will be paramount to your success.

Although not essential, qualifications in a relevant discipline or Certificate IV in Training and Assessment along with an understanding of the function of Local Government and its relationships with the community are desirable.

In this role you will be require to work independently in an outcomes-oriented, solution-focused manner; utilising your good time management and organisation skills to prioritise and effectively complete your workload.

All applicants must have strong computer literacy, including the ability to learn new computer systems and a current Class C driver’s licence.
