About the Organisation

Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation (JCAC) is an Aboriginal community service organisation governed by Julalikari Council, an elected body representing the Aboriginal community of Tennant Creek, NT. JCAC’s constitution directs the operations of the organisation with a general strategy to alleviate poverty and improve the well-being of the Aboriginal community of Tennant Creek and the surrounding Barkly region.

JCAC is the largest employer in the Barkly region, offering CDEP to 190 people in town, and up to 180 in outlying homelands and communities.  JCAC employs about 110 permanent staff. This is one of the success stories of Aboriginal organisations across Australia.

About Tennant Creek, NT

Tennant Creek is a township of about 3,500 people, located 500 km north of Alice Springs and 1,000 kilometres south of Darwin. It’s a place shaped by Aboriginal culture, gold mining and pastoralism. The surrounding area is called the Barkly Tablelands, a region roughly the size of the United Kingdom, and characterised by wide grassy plains, endless blue sky and massive cattle stations.

The traditional owners of the area surrounding Tennant Creek are the Warumungu people and their culture is very much alive and well, with Aboriginals making up approximately 60% of the population, and over ten language groups represented in the town. Their stories are showcased in one of Australia's finest cultural centres, Nyinkka Nyunyu. Tennant Creek has developed from its rough, tough droving and gold mining days into a modern town with shops and a supermarket, accommodation, bars, clubs and restaurants, a major regional hospital, schools and banking facilities.

The recent expansion of the mining industry in the region has largely been on Aboriginal land, meaning that there are now exciting and challenging opportunities for training, employment and economic development. This includes opportunities for increased tourism in the recently established national parks in the region and the resurgence of cultural events such as the Desert Harmony Week each year.

About the Opportunity

Julalikari Council Aboriginal Corporation (JCAC) has an exciting opportunity for a Management Accountant to join their dedicated Tennant Creek team, on a contract basis.

JCAC has grown rapidly over recent years, and with this growth, the company's internal accounting processes are currently in need of a redevelopment, under the guidance of an experienced Management Accountant. Your role will focus on overseeing this redevelopment to ensure the new system is appropriate and implementing the changes smoothly within the business.

This is a contract-based project role for 6-12 months, at which point there may be the opportunity to extend the role into a permanent role, if desired.

More specifically, your duties will include:

  • Liaising with software providers to map internal software architectural requirements;
  • Examining and restructuring banking procedures and relationships;
  • Revising the organisation's reporting requirements; and
  • Reviewing and revising guidelines to ensure that all funding meets government standards.

This role will suit an experienced and creative Management Accountant with extensive experience in reporting for government funding requirements and accreditation. You'll have a proven background in managing organisation-wide change with accounting or financial systems, preferably as a senior financial decision-maker such as CFO. It is preferred, though not mandatory, that you are CPA or CA qualified.

Strong abilities in cross-cultural communication, computer literacy and mentoring staff are vital.

It is of utmost importance that you are skilled in communicating with and listening to Aboriginal people, and demonstrate an understanding of and empathy for their needs.

In a career-making appointment, you'll be afforded the opportunity to bring your innovative flair to the redesign of the business' entire financial system, with the collaborative support of the existing management and finance teams.

Starting on a contract basis, this role gives you the flexibility to live and work in the spectacular Northern Territory environment for 6-12 months, before deciding if you'd like to extend into a permanent Senior Finance role.

You will be rewarded for your dedication, passion and commitment with a competitive executive level salary circa $120,000 (negotiable based on qualifications and experience) plus a range of further benefits, including:

  • Relocation assistance;
  • Subsidised housing for you and your family;
  • Generous salary sacrifice options;
  • Remote Area tax breaks;
  • Vehicle for work and reasonable personal use;
  • Laptop; and
