PRA provides a range of recovery services through community support services, employment services, structured activities programs and community businesses.
PRA is also Australia's largest specialist employer of people with psychiatric disability, each year providing training and supported employment opportunities (through community businesses) to almost 600 people with mental illness in 6 locations across Sydney. About the Opportunity
Psychiatric Rehabilitation Australia (PRA) is seeking a dedicated Mental Health Worker to join their team in Newcastle.
This role is being offered on a permanent part-time contract, working 0.6EFT.
In this role, you will assist in the planning and implementation of active and effective psychosocial programs for people who experience mental health problems and/ or disorders that are referred to PRA services and programs.
In terms of direct duties delivered to consumers, these may include:
- Working as a member of the PRA Psychosocial Services, helping to create & maintain a recovery focused program;
- Maintaining a positive, encouraging and flexible attitude towards participants, ensuring that their dignity, confidentiality, and privacy is respected at all times;
- Interacting with participants, staff, other service providers & carers with integrity and in a professional manner;
- Attending staff meetings and participating in staff supervision as required;
- Participating in continuous improvement & professional development initiatives;
- Supporting participants to complete needs assessment and individual goal setting;
- Exploring community opportunities including sport, leisure, fitness, recreation, education and employment;
- Developing and presenting psychosocial activities on an individual and group basis, that encourage people to participate in community activities; and
- Developing skills for the self management of mental health and general well being.
The successful applicant will have tertiary qualifications in Human Services or Behavioral Sciences, and a strong commitment supporting individuals from a recovery framework. A current driver's licence is mandatory.
You will need experience in providing support and advocacy for people who are experiencing significant disability and/ or social disadvantage, as well as a background in facilitating group work.
Ideal candidates will have a demonstrable knowledge of mental health / psychosocial rehabilitation and recovery orientated services. An understanding of the Disability Services Act and the Anti-Discrimination Act would be advantageous.
As you will be frequently engaging with consumers, family members, colleagues and service providers, you will need to be a caring and understanding individual, with strong communication and organisational skills, and the ability to work in challenging situations. You will have experience in motivating consumers and assisting people to achieve their personal goals.
