About the Organisation
Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) began its life back in 1987 when it grew from a local, grass roots group to become, in 1992, one of the first four regional domestic violence services to be funded by the Queensland government. CRDVS is a member of the Queensland Domestic Violence Services Network, a Queensland network of Regional and State-wide Domestic Violence Services that works collaboratively and strategically to advance understanding of gender, structural, political, economic, legal and cultural inequalities and inequities which result in gender based violence.
CRDVS's vision is "Making a difference - prioritising safety and bringing domestic and family violence to an end".
The organisation provides a confidential and free service for family members who have experienced, or are currently experiencing, domestic and family violence.
The service is staffed by a close-knit team of qualified professionals with experience in adult and child counselling, court support, community education and professional training.
About the Opportunity
Are you passionate about ending domestic and family violence, and prioritising the safety of women and children?
Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service (CRDVS) has a rewarding opportunity for an experienced Domestic Violence Worker to join their team in Cairns. This role is being offered on a fixed term, part time basis, working approximately 19 hours per week.
This organisation upholds the belief that structural inequalities in society greatly disadvantage women and children, resulting in a power differential and violence in interpersonal relationships. You will be required to support and respect this philosophy while upholding the organisational code of ethics and code of conduct.
In this fixed term appointment, you will provide intake assessment, crisis intervention including crisis counselling, advocacy and assistance with Domestic Violence Protection Order applications, as required to ensure victims receive a high quality and timely service.
You'll also be responsible for providing information and referral to perpetrators of domestic violence by telephone and providing community education and inter-agency cooperation.
More specifically, your duties will include (but not be limited to):
- Providing crisis assistance, information and referral, crisis counselling, case management and assistance with protection order applications to victims of domestic and family violence;
- Participating in Domestic Violence Court Team Briefing meetings and assisting when necessary to provide cover at Cairns Domestic Violence Court;
- Maintaining links and networks with other organisations to provide effective services and improved coordination;
- Developing and maintaining professional and client resources for use in the organisation;
- Preparing and maintaining appropriate, accurate and confidential records of client work; and
- Assisting in enhancing greater community awareness of domestic and family violence and the effects it has on women and children.
The successful candidate will have (or be working towards) appropriate tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Community Welfare or a related social science discipline and will have substantial experience in providing crisis counselling, case management, advocacy and crisis intervention. You will have an in-depth understanding of the effects and causes of domestic violence, including knowledge of cultural differences and needs.
To be successful in this position you will also need to be able to demonstrate, or have the ability to rapidly acquire, sound knowledge of legislation impacting on situations of domestic and family violence.
You will be an enthusiastic individual with outstanding interpersonal and communication skills to enable you to work cooperatively within a team to attain organisational and client goals and to liaise with government and non-government agencies to advocate on behalf of clients. Also required are computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office applications.
All applicants must hold (or obtain) a current driver's licence, a 'Positive Notice blue card' and undergo a formal police criminal history check.
If you are looking for a challenging yet meaningful and personally satisfying role, this is it. CRDVS offers a supportive and flexible workplace, with a team of professionals that is passionately devoted to ending domestic violence in the Cairns community. The organisation is proud of its close-knit team culture and low staff turnover, indicative of not just the personal reward in the work, but the supportiveness of the team.
Staff and management are open to new ideas, so this is a perfect role for someone who enjoys the freedom to improve systems and processes to work more effectively. On top of a comprehensive induction to the organisation's services and management, you will also be supported to continue your professional development, with study leave, training, conferences and other career advancement opportunities available. You will also receive regular in-house and external professional supervision.
The successful applicant will be rewarded with an attractive remuneration circa $54,907-$59,692 (pro rata), plus annual leave loading and the opportunity to increase the value of your take-home pay with salary sacrifice options.
