About the Organisation

Djunbunji is a not-for-profit company established by Mandingalbay Yidinji Traditional Owners in 2010 to manage their land and sea country near Cairns, North Queensland.

Mandingalbay Yidinji country in far north Queensland covers some 40 kilometres of coastline and includes two World Heritage Areas, a nationally threatened ecological community and a large number of nationally threatened and/or migratory species. Mandingalbay Yidinji country covers areas in the East Trinity Region as well as the southern part of the Yarrabah Shire. Much of the country is mountainous with peaks reaching over 1000 metres.

About the Opportunity

Djunbunji is now seeking a Chief Executive Officer to lead their team, based at East Trinity near Cairns.

Under the direction of the Djunbunji Board, you'll supervise and support a natural and cultural resource management team to manage Australia’s first multi-tenure terrestrial and marine Indigenous Protected Area (IPA) in partnership with Federal, State and Local Government agencies. You'll also be responsible for identifying, developing and directing the implementation of the corporate and administrative structures, policies and plans of the organisation.

Some of your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Managing and mentoring staff;
  • Coordinating staff training and development;
  • Securing and acquitting government grants and fee-for-service contracts;
  • Supporting Traditional Owner access, use and management of the IPA;
  • Strengthening collaboration with partner agencies; and
  • Developing new economic and employment opportunities for Mandingalbay Yidinji people.

To be successful in this role, you will need relevant tertiary qualifications in Business Management, including a BA or MBA or demonstrated experience in general management and operational management. You must demonstrate superior leadership skills, work well within a small team environment and have the ability to work independently with little or no supervision. Advanced organisational, decision-making, problem-solving skills and conflict-management abilities are essential.

The successful applicant will possess proven success in delivering significant organisational outcomes, with demonstrated experience in developing and organising policy and strategic plans and the ability to generate business vision.

Additionally, you'll require exceptional oral and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with potential business partners and community leaders. Although not essential, advanced networking skills and experience working within Indigenous organisationas will be well regarded. A respect and understanding for Indigenous culture is essential to this role.
