About the Organisation
The Victoria Daly Shire Council became an entity on the 1st July 2008 through the amalgamation of 8 Northern Territory community councils covering an area of 168,000sqkm, an area approximately twice the size of Tasmania. Council's aim is to strengthen its communities with local people delivering shire services to their own communities with the skills and knowledge of their own culture, community and people.
Victoria Daly Shire is only three years old as an organisation, so Council are currently recruiting people who share their vision to help develop the new organisation.
About the Region
The Northern Territory is one of the most picturesque environments on the planet, spanning more than 1.4 million square kilometres from the centre to the northerly coast of Australia. Ancient woodlands meet sandy beaches and escarpments tower above lush billabongs in this land of diversity.
There's something for everybody in this part of the territory. Whether it's climbing the escarpments, viewing rock art, catching fish, exploring the red desert flora and fauna or trekking through chasms in Central Australia, 4WD'ing experiences abound and there's the opportunity for a photograph in every corner.
Wadeye is located 420 km south-west of Northern Territory's capital, Darwin, and has the largest Aboriginal community with a population of 2,500, comprising over 20 tribal groups speaking seven languages. Wadeye offers residents all the conveniences of a modern town, with a post office, grocery store, art gallery, schools, police station, healthcare and an airport with daily flights to Darwin (only 50 minutes).
