This has been the case ever since, with 40% of clients being non-Aboriginal.

Walgett Shire offers a friendly relaxed lifestyle and there are many sporting and recreational pursuits available. Many people take advantage of the proximity of the Narran Lakes, while others take the opportunity to explore Australia's natural landscapes that seem a world away from the bustle of the city. If you're looking for a change of pace and the opportunity to gain a unique rural experience that few will ever encounter, this is the location for you.

Education throughout the Shire is provided by a range of high quality schools, which offer distance education units to assist with education for rural and isolated families. Post secondary education is also offered by the Western Institute of TAFE, Walgett campus.
