About the Opportunity

Griffith City Council has an excellent opportunity for a Senior Building Surveyor to join its close-knit and dynamic City Strategy & Development Department, in Griffith, NSW.    

Reporting to the Building Certification Coordinator, the main responsibility of this position is to provide advice on development and building control issues, ensuring development applications, construction certificate and related plans comply with appropriate Acts and standards.

You'll work closely with the professional City Strategy & Development team to provide efficient, effective and courteous service and information about building and development matters to the general public, developers, builders and contractors.

Your major tasks will also include (but will not be limited to):   

  • Assessing development applications and preparing reports with appropriate conditions of consent;
  • Advising applicants, residents, organisations and other staff on development and building control issues;
  • Assessing and issuing construction, compliance, occupation & building certificates, and Complying Development Certificates;
  • Inspecting and monitoring development, building and plumbing and drainage works to ensure compliance with standards, legislation and consents;
  • Coordinating the provision of Building Certification services to other organisations which are contracted for service with Griffith City Council; and
  • Responding to customer enquiries within agreed timeframes.

Griffith City Council is seeking a candidate with a tertiary qualification in Building Surveying or equivalent, and extensive experience as a practicing Building Surveyor, in either Local Government or the private sector. To be considered, you'll need to possess or be eligible for Accreditation as a Council Accredited Certifier under Section 5(1A) of the Building Professionals Act 2005.

The ideal candidate will have a thorough working knowledge of the Building Code of Australia, Environmental Planning and Assessment Amendment Act, Local Government Act and relevant subordinate legislation, as well as ideally an understanding of Class 2-9 Buildings.

This is a 'hands-on' Council appointment, and accordingly, you will possess excellent customer service, report writing and oral communication skills, as well as the ability to work independently and as part of a team and to undertake and complete projects within agreed timelines. With a professional approach to your work, you will have a demonstrated ability to deal with conflicting priorities and meet deadlines in a busy environment and a demonstrated proficiency in the use of word processing and spreadsheet software.
