About the Organisation
The Mt Theo Program was started by the Yuendumu Community in 1993 to address chronic petrol sniffing in the area. The Program now encompasses four main arms of service: the Mt Theo Outstation cultural treatment and rehabilitation program; the Jaru Pirrjirdi youth development/leadership and aftercare program incorporating the Yuendumu Youth diversionary program; the Warra Warra Kanyi (WWK) Counselling and Mentoring service; and an Outreach Program providing diversionary and media activities in Willowra, Nyirrpi and Lajamanu.
The Mt Theo Program has dedicated itself to developing strength, health, meaningful pathways and leadership in Warlpiri youth. The sustainable, and notable, success of the program is based on the support, strength and character of Warlpiri youth and their communities, and the outstanding dedication of its staff. The program was created by and for Warlpiri people, and is governed by a Committee of 62 Warlpiri people.
The key aim of this partnership between the Mt Theo Program, Warlpiri youth and their communities is the facilitation of positive and meaningful futures for them as individuals and their families, and their community and culture at large.

About Yuendumu, NT
Sitting on the edge of the Tanami Desert, 300 kilometres north west of Alice Springs, the remote community of Yuendumu is one of the largest Aboriginal communities in central Australia and has a thriving community of Aboriginal artists.
Yuendumu is a community largely made up of the Warlpiri and Anmatyerr Aboriginal people, with a population of approximately 817. It is located within the Yuendumu Aboriginal Lands Trust area on traditional Anmatyerr and Warlpiri land and includes numerous outstations.
For an isolated area, Yuendumu is surprisingly busy. With a strong arts centre, women's centre, its own media centre and a cutting edge youth program, Yuendumu is a community known for its energy and vitality.
About the Opportunity
The Warlpiri Youth Development Aboriginal Corporation (WYDAC) has a rewarding opportunity for a Counsellor to join the team within the Mt Theo Program - the nationally acclaimed community response to substance abuse and youth development. Based in Yuendumu, NT, this is a full time position working 5 days per week, incorporating after hours and weekends as required.
In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for the management of the Warra Warra Kanyi Counselling and Mentoring service.
**The WWK Counselling service forms one of the five branches of the Mt Theo Program. Warra-Warra Kanyi is fully funded by the Personal Helpers and Mentors (PHaMS) initiative, which is facilitated by the Mental Health branch of FaHCSIA.
Working as part of a supportive team of Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal staff, you will liaise directly with clients across the community, as well as coordinate the Warra Warra Kanyi staff, activities and resources.
The Mt Theo Program is ideally seeking an experienced and qualified Counsellor with tertiary qualifications in Psychology, Counselling, Social Work or any other relevant discipline and Accredited Membership with an appropriate body, however Registered Social Workers are encouraged to apply. Proven experience in client and case management, team management, working with young people and at-risk youth and responding to client crises is essential to this role.
Your demonstrated capacity for resourcefulness, self-motivation and independent decision making will be pivotal to your success, as will your exceptional communication and negotiation skills, including your ability to manage external relationships effectively. Additionally, you'll require a strong level of computer literacy and the ability to produce and present all relevant organisational reports.
An understanding and experience in working within cross-cultural environments and community development, preferably in a remote indigenous context, and a knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture including the contemporary issues affecting remote Indigenous people, will be highly regarded. The ability to facilitate and take direction from an Indigenous Management committee and the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal people will also be viewed on favourably.
Suitable candidates must be willing to obtain a Police Check and currently hold, or be eligible to obtain an Ochre Card.
