Westernport Water has a diversified water supply with water sourced from the catchment supplying the Candowie Reservoir via Tennant Creek, the Bass River and ground water bores from the Aquifer. The company supplies wastewater services to 90 per cent of properties that receive water.

Westernport Water has two wastewater treatment plants, the Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant and the King Road Wastewater Treatment Plant, which process 1100 megalitres (ML) of domestic wastewater each year, and is one of 19 water businesses operating in Victoria.

About the Opportunity 

Westernport Water has an exciting opportunity for a Water Quality Officer to join their dedicated team on Phillip Island, VIC.

Reporting to the Environment & Sustainability Coordinator, your primary role will be to ensure the corporation is providing safe drinking water and fulfilling its regulatory obligations.

This will involve the collation of data, sampling and monitoring programs as well as providing assistance, technical support and specialised advice on water quality for the development and maintenance of operating procedures.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include:

  • Reviewing and investigating water quality incidents and assisting with corrective actions;
  • Ensuring water quality policy, procedures and plans are implemented and maintained;
  • Developing and maintaining risk management plans for reticulated water supplies;
  • Keeping up to date with existing and new legislation, and its impact on the corporation;
  • Developing comprehensive sampling programs, and monitoring their effectiveness;
  • Maintaining the water quality database and it's access; and
  • Assisting in the management of budget expenses for water quality activities.

Westernport Water is looking for a professional individual with significant experience in water treatment disinfection processes and water sampling techniques. A relevant degree in Science or specialist qualifications in water treatment and management is required, as is a knowledge of the application of relevant drinking water legislation, regulations and industry standards.

You'll be experienced in undertaking water quality assessments and will have an understanding of reticulated water systems. Well developed communication skills are essential to enable you to identify, research and document proposals as well as provide clear explanations and education on technical matters to staff and customers.

The successful candidate will be a team player, though still have the skills necessary to plan and organise their own workload whilst dealing with conflicting business priorities. You'll need the ability gain cooperation from information sources and external organisations in order to execute plans to achieve business goals and objectives. Good computer literacy, specifically with the Microsoft Office suite is essential.

Although not essential, the ability to manage technical projects, conduct wasterwater sampling and analysis and experience in auditing would be highly regarded. Well developed analytical, research and conceptual skills are also desirable.
