Carers ACT is the recognised, expert voice with, and for, carers while being the major provider of carers services and support in the ACT. They are the only family carer centered, service provider in the ACT that provides information, advice and services. Every aspect of their work is underpinned by how they can improve carers' lives by ensuring they have information to give them choice and provide opportunities to empower them to have their voices heard by policy and opinion makers.

About the Opportunity

Carers ACT has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Coordinator - Carer Advisory to join their dynamic team in Holt, Canberra. This position is a temporary contract role working until June 2014 (with the option of extension pending funding).

Within this pivotal role, you'll be serving as the first point of contact for carers in the ACT.  Importantly, it will be your responsibility to provide high quality professional support to carers contacting the Carer Advisory Line.

More specifically, your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Working with Family carers to empower and support them to navigate the care system either over the phone or face to face;
  • Identifying systemic advocacy issues for Carers; 
  • Liaising and negotiating with internal and external key stakeholders, service providers and other to meet carer needs;
  • Maintaining accurate carer, client and service provider records and data; and
  • Working individually and collaboratively as part of a team to maintain a high quality professional service.

To be successful, you'll need relevant qualifications or accredited training in a Community or Health related field and will have demonstrated experience in these fields as well. You'll also have an understanding of the issues of concern for carers and care recipients and an appreciation of their needs. 

Importantly, you'll have a strong knowledge and understanding go the ACT community and health sectors and will have the ability to provide information to clients regarding the services available to them. Your communication and interpersonal skills will be outstanding and you'll have the ability to build and nurture relationships and networks with service providers and target groups within the ACT community.  In addition, you will have highly developed organisational and administrative skills ensuring you are able to maintain client documentation, records and other files to the highest standard.

While not essential, candidates with knowledge of Microsoft Office and/or knowledge of legislative requirements relevant to this position will be highly regarded.  A current drivers licence will also be viewed favourably.
