About the Opportunity
Bourke Aboriginal Health Service has a rewarding opportunity for an AOD Counselor (Alcohol & Other Drugs) to join its dedicated team in Bourke, NSW.
Reporting directly to the CEO, you'll be responsible the delivery of drug and alcohol services including the coordination of referrals for visiting drug and alcohol specialists. In addition, your responsibilities will include providing expert advice and training for primary health care staff, providing support and supervision to drug and alcohol workers and supporting the local Aboriginal Community and services to develop culturally appropriate promotion, prevention and community development initiatives.
More specifically, your day to day duties will include (but not be limited to):
- Providing casework and counseling;
- Conducting D&A assessments and follow-up referrals;
- Coordinating care with other health workers and agencies;
- Running D&A groups and programs;
- Delivering community education, promotion and prevention; and
- Implementing primary health care D&A screening and brief intervention.
Bourke Aboriginal Health Service is seeking a candidate with counseling qualifications in Alcohol and Other Drugs or a closely related field, plus extensive experience in drug and alcohol clinical work including the coordination of clinical services. In addition, you will have experience working with Indigenous clients and a demonstrated commitment to evidence based and culturally appropriate practice including a willingness to participate in clinical supervision and cultural mentoring.
Importantly, you'll also have experience in service and program planning, community development as well as staff training and development. You'll be providing AOD counseling and casework as well as networking with external health providers so it is essential that you are highly organised and have excellent communication and administration skills.
As there is travel involved in the role, your flexibility and willingness to travel and remain away from home base for short periods of time is also required.
While not required, previous experience working in rural health or a primary health care environment and/or knowledge of mental health or dual diagnosis interventions will be highly regarded.
