About the Organisation

The Gold Coast Medicare Local (GCML) is an independent, not for profit, primary health care organisation. It aims to improve the health and well-being of the Gold Coast community by working in partnership with health and community services such as general practice, allied health, mental health, aged care and youth services.

Medicare Locals have been established across Australia to coordinate and integrate health and community services and to identify local needs and create local strategies in response.

GCML receives funding primarily, but not exclusively, from the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing.

About the Opportunity

Gold Coast Medicare Local has an exciting opportunity for a Director of Primary Health Care Support and Improvement to join their team, based at Burleigh Waters, Gold Coast.

Reporting to the CEO, you will provide leadership and management for a group of Program Managers, while achieving key organisational accountabilities in line with the organisation's strategic direction.

More specifically, some of your responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Providing effective leadership, development, oversight, guidance and performance management to direct reports and related program areas;
  • Leading and directing the needs assessment, planning, service development, commissioning, implementation, evaluation, improvement and reporting of clinical health care and programs, as well as primary health care quality improvement support services and programs;
  • Co-ordinating and leading the delivery and incorporation of programs and initiatives to engage the Primary Health Care Practitioner community;
  • Developing solutions and improvements that enhance the capacity of the Primary Health Care and Community Sector to meet community expectations and requirements;
  • Managing the development and implementation of programs to develop cross sector solutions; and
  • Identifying development opportunities and developing plans, processes and proposals to secure new program funding.

The successful candidate will possess several years of demonstrated experience improving health outcomes in primary health care, as well as tertiary qualifications and/or professional experience in a directly related field to this position. Demonstrated knowledge of multiple health care systems across primary or acute health care settings will be highly regarded, as will a record of critical analysis, particularly of issues in primary health care. Additionally, you'll also possess an understanding of good organisational and clinical governance practices, as well as demonstrated knowledge of the primary healthcare industry or ability to acquire that knowledge quickly.

You'll be a proven senior manager in the field of health care or community services, with the ability to prioritise your workflow and work to tight deadlines, and will have the capacity to develop, implement and evaluate the GCML's strategy, frameworks, policy and programs. In addition, you will have extensive experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of quality improvement initiatives within the primary health care or community services field. 

Utilising your superior communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills, you effectively build relationships with key stakeholders to benefit the organisation. An existing, established network among primary health care organisations in Queensland will be advantageous.

Additionally, you'll need to display initiative and be self-motivated, allowing you to work both independently and as part of a team.  You will also have the ability to think conceptually enabling you to analyse issues and develop innovative strategies within organisational constraints.

Demonstrated computer literacy in a range of software packages including Microsoft Office suite of products is essential.

The successful candidate will also need to have some flexibility as the role requires some evening and weekend commitments for which time of in lieu will be provided.
