Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local is an independent, not-for-profit organisation with its own board comprised of community and health professionals with business and management expertise.  They have more than 160 staff made up of GPs, clinical staff, primary health care professionals and program managers.

Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local work in areas such as health system integration, mental health service delivery within the primary health care sector, Closing the Gap initiatives, after hours general practice services, quality improvement programs within general practices, and provide administrative support. They also specialise in delivery of CPD that focuses on multidisciplinary approaches to service delivery. All programs are designed and delivered by health professionals.

About the Opportunities

Townsville-Mackay Medicare Local currently has two exciting opportunities available for a Speech Pathologist as well as a Dietitian to join their dedicated workforce, based in Townsville, QLD.  These positions are full time, working a fixed term contract until 30 June, 2014.

The primary aim for both the Speech Pathologist and Dietitian roles will be responsible for delivering high quality speech pathology or dietitian services to clients of Community Rehab northern Queensland (CRnQ), as well providing relevant outreach services to eligible Rural Primary Health Service (RPHS) communities based on identified health needs.

In both positions, you will be working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to promote coordinated approaches to the provision of integrated primary health services.

Some of your primary responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Delivering evidence-based individualised speech pathology OR dietitian interventions and consultancy for people with a broad range of conditions;
  • Collaborating with the participant, family and support persons to promote and maintain independence within the home and community environment;
  • Attending relevant scheduled and multi-disciplinary education and training programs;
  • Providing accurate, up-to-date information, support and education for participants, family and support persons;
  • Participating in service development, evaluation and quality service improvement activities; and
  • Supervising students during their pre-entry clinical placements as required.

To be successful in the Speech Pathologist role, you'll have tertiary qualifications in Speech Pathology, along with current registration (or eligibility) with the Speech Pathology Board of Queensland. 

For the Dietitian position you will need a Dietetics tertiary qualification, as well as eligibility for registration with the Accredited Practising Dietitian program with the Dietitians Association of Australia.

Additionally, you'll have the ability to provide high level evidence based clinical speech pathology or dietitian services consistent with best practice management for consumers with neurological conditions and chronic disease, along with a solid understanding of self management or health coaching principles and practice.

Your strong written and verbal communication skills are essential, giving you the ability to liaise with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.  You will also have excellent time management and problem solving skills, allowing you to manage a complex clinical caseload effectively, and you will be able to work well in a team environment as well as autonomously.

You'll need to be computer literate, including the use of the Microsoft Office suite and electronic medical record systems.  Importantly, you'll have the ability to work flexible hours and be available to travel to rural communities and stay for up to a week.

To ensure your success, you will have a current driver's licence, and either hold or be willing to obtain a current Blue Card.  You will also be required to have up to date immunisations.  Please note that eligibility for employment is dependent on a successful police check.
