About the Organisation

The Spinifex Health Service is an expanding Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service located in the Tjuntjuntjara Community on the Spinifex Lands, 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie in the Great Victoria Desert region of Western Australia.

Servicing a close knit community of around 209 people, the Health Service is managed by the Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation, a non-profit community organisation with responsibility for the administration and management of Tjuntjuntjara.  

The organisation operates a comprehensive primary health service with a team of skilled health professionals including a Medical Director, visiting specialists, remote area nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers.  The Tjuntjuntjara Clinic supports regular monthly visits by our Medical Director/GP, visiting specialists and fortnightly GP clinics provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service.  With a range of health programs and clinical services designed to meet local needs, the Spinifex Health Service presents a golden opportunity to make a difference in one of the most remote and cohesive communities in the country.

About Tjuntjuntjara

The people of Tjuntjuntjara are known today as the Spinifex People, the traditional custodians of 55,000 square kms of Spinifex Native Title Determination area. The community is situated 680km north-east of Kalgoorlie within the Shire of Menzies, approximately 10 hours’ drive from Kalgoorlie. It has a resident population of 209 people, including the world renowned Spinifex artists. Cultural events often attract several hundred visitors.


Since establishing Tjuntjuntjara within their traditional homelands in 1989, the community has steadily grown and developed into a stable and important focus for the traditional cultural cycles of Western Desert life.  People from throughout the region with traditional attachment to the area have returned to live at Tjuntjuntjara. Despite the community’s isolation and remoteness, the Spinifex People's determination to live in their country and provide strong local governance and stability for a highly dedicated workforce makes Tjuntjuntjara a unique place to live.

About the Opportunity

The Spinifex Health Service has an exciting opportunity for a General Manager to join their teams based in Kalgoorlie & Tjuntjuntjara, Western Australia on a twelve month contract with the potential for renewal of the contract.

Working collaboratively with the Medical Director and the Clinical Programs Manager, you'll be responsible for the strategic and operational management of Spinifex Health Service, assisting in the delivery, development and implementation of primary health programs and services.

Your time will be split between the offices in Kalgoorlie and Tjuntjuntjara with regular travel between the two locations.

More specifically, some of your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Cultivating a productive and supportive work environment;
  • Managing the Health Service's staff and assets;
  • Providing strong leadership to the clinical staff in the day to day operations of the clinic;
  • Assisting with the financial management of the Health Service;
  • Overseeing the clinical accreditation process;
  • Liaising with external stakeholders and agencies; and
  • Representing and advocating on behalf of the organisation.

The successful candidate will have a tertiary degree, preferably with additional postgraduate qualifications, in Health/Business Administration or Social Sciences relevant to the provision of health care service in an Aboriginal community. Importantly, you'll also have significant experience and a proven track record in the clinical accreditation process as well as the management of primary health care services in a remote Aboriginal community.

As a experienced leader, you'll be skilled in negotiation and mediation with conflict resolution, team building and problem solving skills.  Additionally, you'll have knowledge of legal and regulatory compliance and an understanding of contemporary political, socio-cultural and economic issues affecting Aboriginal people.

You'll be computer literate with highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate sensitively in a cross-cultural environment and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team.  You'll also be solution focused with an understanding of public health and community development principles.

A current manual driver's licence, Working with Children Check, National Police Certificate, First Aid Certificate and the willingness to travel between Kalgoorlie and Tjuntjuntjara are essential to be considered for this role.

Paupiyala Tjarutja Aboriginal Corporation manages the Tjuntjuntjara Community and Ilkurlka Visitor Centre on behalf of the Spinifex Traditional Owners.


The people of Tjuntjuntjara are known today as the Spinifex People or Anangu [the people] locally. They lived in the Great Victorian Desert long before European settlement of Australia. Scientists have found evidence of human habitation in Central Australia that dates back approximately 25,000 years. Today the communities of Tjuntjuntjara and Ilkurlka are managed by Paupiyala Tjarutja and Pila Nguru and going from strength to strength. Both communities are major cultural centres and are moving towards economic sustainability.
