Servicing the municipalities of Boroondara, Manningham, Monash and Whitehorse, IEMML is responsible for driving improvements in general practice and primary health care to ensure that services are better tailored to meet the needs of local communities. As part of its vision, IEMML has developed a strategic plan to deliver enhanced primary health care across a number of areas including after hours care, aged care services, mental health and eHealth.

About the Opportunity 

The Inner East Melbourne Medicare Local (IEMML) is looking for a Mental Health Clinician to join their team in Burwood, Melbourne. There are potentially two vacancies (1.6 FTE) which can be filled on either a full-time or part-time basis on a fixed-term contract until June 30, 2015.

As a vital member of the IEMML Mental Health Program, you will be responsible for delivering quality mental health services, including triage, assessment and direct service delivery for the community within the local catchment.

This role has a specific focus on the Access To Allied Psychological Services (ATAPS) - Suicide Prevention Program (SPS), which is a federally funded program that support clients who are at moderate risk of suicide or self harm. The service involves making contact with referred clients, triage, establishment of a therapeutic relationship, liaison with and clinical support to the referrer, care coordination and discharge planning.

More specifically, your daily duties will include (but are not limited to):

  • Providing intake and access functions to IEMML mental health programs;
  • Developing policies and proceduresto support targeted ATAPS services;
  • Providing therapeutic intervention for people at low to moderate risk of suicide;
  • Appropriately refer and/or support referrals to other mental health providers engaged in delivery of appropriate care;
  • Assisting in the implementation of a clinical governance framework for the ATAPS program;
  • Liaising with local health services to develop and ensure common understanding of referral pathways;
  • Assisting in the promotion of the Service to General Practice and Emergency Departments and the development of policies, procedures and documentation;
  • Acting as an ambassador for Inner East Melbourne Medicare Local; and
  • Supporting clinical programs delivered by Inner East Melbourne Medicare Local as required.

The successful candidate will take on an individualised approach to client care and will possess current tertiary qualifications in the field of clinical psychology, social work, occupational therapy or mental health nursing. In this role, it is essential that you have significant experience in providing evidence-based theraputic interventions to people with mild to moderate mental illness. Experience working within a collaborative recovery model is essential.

You will have experience in duty of care, including an understanding of the Mental Health Act and knowledge of primary care and the services applicable to people with mental illness. Additionally, you will have knowledge in undertaking comprehensive assessments, risk assessments and wellness plans, coupled with in-depth understanding of current mental health diagnostic criteria.

IEMML is seeking a self-motivated and flexible individual with exceptional communication, engagement and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work proactively with GPs, psychiatrists, other health professionals, significant others and a wide range of stakeholders. You will have proven experience in working across programs and sectors, as well as computer literacy and demonstrated abilities in organisation, time management, multi-tasking and analytical problem solving, with a willingness to learn and develop your skills.
