About the Opportunity

Inner East Primary Care Partnership (IEPCP) has a fantastic opportunity for a Chinese Community Engagement Officer to join their multidisciplinary team on a part time basis (0.8 FTE), based in Melbourne's Inner East catchment.

The Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation (VRGF) has funded IEPCP to deliver a new project “Chasing the Luck”.  The project will focus on reducing harm from gambling amongst Chinese restaurant shift workers.

Reporting to the Health Promotion Project Coordinator - Problem Gambling, your main aim in this pivotal role will be to work closely with specific groups to identify and understand local gambling issues, and to explore opportunities to reduce harm from gambling and promote access to services and alternate recreation for the local Chinese community.

Some of your key responsibilities of this role will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Attending relevant working parties/steering committees for the Chasing the Luck project;
  • Identifying and maintaining positive links with staff, service providers and community organisations, while promoting an understanding of cultural norms and social issues;
  • Communicating the results of research into problem gambling within the Chinese community across the organisation and externally to key stakeholders, and preparing and submitting reports as required;
  • Providing advice, guidance and support on problem gambling issues, while promoting gambling support services within the Chinese community;
  • Arranging and documenting consultation with the Chinese community on gambling and related issues; and
  • Providing advice and feedback on the development of strategies to reduce gambling harm amongst Chinese restaurant workers.

The successful candidate will have relevant tertiary qualifications, with demonstrated experience in community development or health promotion in a community setting. You will also possess a good understanding of health promotion and community development theory and practice.

An excellent understanding of and working relationship with the Chinese community with a fluency in Cantonese and Mandarin is key to your success in this role. You should be able to demonstrate cultural sensitivity in all your practices, particularly towards the Chinese community.

IEPCP is seeking a candidate with excellent interpersonal skills who can develop effective relationships with stakeholders, and has the ability to work independently as well as part of a small team to achieve project goals. You will also have well developed organisational and time management skills, and an ability to communicate effectively between and about different cultures.
