About the Opportunities

The Shire of Halls Creek has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Youth Development Officer with a sense of adventure to live and work within an Aboriginal community in the Halls Creek region. You'll form part of the dynamic Halls Creek Youth Services team.

The main aim of this rewarding role will be to facilitate the provision of social, recreational and cultural activities for young people in the community.  In doing so, you will be assisting to empower young people to build on their knowledge, appreciate their cultural inheritance and make positive life choices.

More specifically, some of your duties will include:

  • Facilitating appropriate, sustainable, high quality youth diversion services that will reduce at risk youths adverse contact with the criminal justice system;
  • Encouraging, initiating and supervising appropriate and sustainable high-quality, culturally relevant after-school-hours activities;
  • Coordinating programs and services to build on strengths, minimise gaps/overlaps and link young people with education, training and culture, skill development, employment opportunities etc.;
  • Raising awareness of youth issues, services and activities within the community and facilitating direct linkages between agencies in appropriate sectors of the community;
  • Developing links, systems and capacity that enable young people to participate in, connect with and contribute to all opportunities offered in their community; and
  • Ensuring young people participate in the initiation, planning and delivery of programs, and supervising, mentoring and supporting any local trainee through a certificate in youth work.

To be successful in this role, you will have experience or qualifications in Youth Studies, Social Sciences, Behavioural Sciences, or Law and Justice, along with a good understanding of the contemporary context and experiences of young people. This pivotal role requires a well organised team player with exceptional time management and problem solving skills who has a proven understanding of youth work principles, practices, knowledge, skills and ethics, preferably with awareness of the issues faced by youth in remote areas, particularly Aboriginal youth.

A clear understanding of the challenges that you may face living and working in a remote community is essential. You will be comfortable and at home travelling considerable distances.

The successful applicant will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, allowing you to work effectively with children and young people aged up to 25 years. In addition, you will have a proven background in being able to work collaboratively with colleagues, young people, schools, members of the local community and external agencies and stakeholders. You will need sound computer literacy skills, including a working knowledge of MS Outlook, Word, Excel and Internet Explorer. 

The ability to work autonomously is essential in this role, as is a working knowledge of information technology and community development principles and practices. It is mandatory that all applicants need a current C class driver's licence enabling them to drive a manual car, a current working with Children check (or willingness to obtain one), and the preparedness to undergo a Police Check and pre-employment check.
