About the Opportunity

Are you looking to progress your Human Resources career with a progressive local government in tropical North Queensland?

Carpentaria Shire Council has an exciting opportunity for a Human Resources Manager to join the Management team based in Normanton, QLD.

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services, you'll be responsible for leading and coordinating the provision of human resources, training and development and WHS services across Council.  This will include developing and implementing policies and plans that support the long term strategic direction of Council.

Your responsibilities include (but are not limited):

  • Supervising and providing leadership to the human resources team;
  • Advising the CEO, Directors and Managers in relation to HR management policies and practices;
  • Providing strategic and operational employee relations advice; 
  • Managing the development of effective human resources policies and procedures; 
  • Managing the recruitment selection process on behalf of the CEO, Directors and Managers; and
  • Leading the development of the annual staff training and development plan.

To be considered, you'll have relevant tertiary qualifications in Human Resources Management coupled with extensive knowledge and experience of human resource services, preferably within a local government context.  In addition, you will have demonstrated ability in managing program budgets including budget allocations for training requirements of the entire Council workforce. 

Carpentaria Shire Council are looking for an effective leader with outstanding interpersonal communication skills which will enable you to motivate and mentor teams whilst building effective professional relationships with your colleagues.  Importantly, you'll also have an understanding of Training & Development practices and policy development.  

You'll also have knowledge of industrial instruments as well as current legislation and regulations that relate to the management of human resource functions within a local government authority.  The ability to undertake and coordinate projects and/or functions and the ability to prepare complex correspondence is also essential.  

A current C class driver's licence is required before commencing employment with Carpentaria Shire Council.
