About the Opportunity

Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Operative Ltd is on the look out for a culturally-sensitive Social Worker to join their Dandenong team and work within the Bringing Them Home Project.

In this highly rewarding and varied role, you'll be responsible for aiding in the delivery of a confidential, culturally appropriate group support service for community members affected by the removal of children from families and community, as well as the forced adoption cases that separated birth mothers from their children (The Stolen Generation).

 Key responsibilities of the role include (but are not limited to):

  • Assessing community members and liaising with internal / external support agencies to facilitate the provision of support services and counselling;
  • Developing and implementing community education and promotion activities;
  • Participating in, and developing, programs and strategic initiatives aimed at delivering holistic support services;
  • Actively liaising and consulting with key agencies, particularly Link-Up Victoria;
  • Developing and maintaining accurate and up-to-date client records; and
  • Participating in ongoing professional development, including training and supervision.

To be considered for this role, you will require either a tertiary qualification in a relevant field (e.g. Social Work, Community Development, Counselling) or significant experience and expertise in a Koori Social Welfare setting.

Due to the nature of this role, applicants must have a thorough understanding of government practices relating to the removal of children from families and community, as well as the forced adoption cases that separated birth mothers from their children (The Stolen Generation). This should include an understanding of current state and national issues surrounding the 'Bringing Them Home' initiatives, as well as the effects of early separation from family and community.

Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Operative is seeking applications from proactive individuals who will actively participate in program development and implementation. You'll be comfortable working within a community-controlled organisation and display a commitment to holistic service delivery and best practice. Importantly, you'll have an understanding of, and sensitivity towards, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural issues.

You'll consider yourself a 'team player', and enjoy collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate service delivery and build positive working relationships. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential to this. Additionally, you'll have sound computer skills along with the ability to collect and record data and compile reports as required.

Please note: The successful applicant will be required to undergo a Working with Children check and a National Police check. A current unrestricted driver's licence is also a requirement of this position.
