About the Organisation

Focus ACT is a not-for-profit non-government Incorporated Association that offers housing and accommodation support to adults who have an intellectual disability. Focus currently provides over 40,000 hours of direct support annually, with the level of support ranging from providing basic assistance for daily living and managing a home, to intensive 24-hour support.

The organisation aims to assist people with a disability to choose how they want to live, establish and maintain their own home in the community, and manage their daily lives.

About the Opportunity

Focus ACT has a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Support Worker to join their friendly team in Deakin, Canberra. The position is fixed term for a period of 12 months.  

The successful candidate will work under the direction of the Accommodation team to provide direct support to people with a disability and coordinate the day-to-day operations of households. You will also have shared responsibility to manage rostering of Support Worker shifts using a specifically designed database.

Some of the duties of this varied position include:

  • Working as an effective team leader to coordinate support and assistance to meet individual needs;
  • Providing direct support to individuals with their personal care, medical needs and domestic responsibilities;
  • Overseeing the day-to-day support associated with maintaining homes;
  • Staff rostering and organising support schedules;
  • Assisting people to manage their finances and budget; and
  • Some on-call duties.

The ideal candidate will have previous experience in providing direct support, as well as supervising and supporting staff. Formal qualifications in Disabilities will be held in high regard, but are not essential if you have sufficient experience. It is expected the successful applicant will show a commitment to undertaking industry training.

You will need excellent communication and organisational skills, including sound writing skills. You will need to have advanced computer skills and competency in using databases and all Microsoft programs.

You will lead and inspire others, acting as a role model for individuals and Support Workers by demonstrating a sound understanding of human rights and personal practices.

A current drivers licence and access to a comprehensively insured vehicle are essential for this role. You will also need a Senior First Aid Certificate (or willingness to obtain one) and a Working with Vulnerable people registration.
