About the Organisation

In partnership with the Southland Community, Environment Southland is the statutory body responsible for managing the natural and physical resources of air, land, water and coast within the local region.  Environment Southland is responsible for managing the entire Southland region, which covers over three million hectares from Awarua Point on the West Coast to Waiparau Head on the fringe of the East Coast and includes Stewart Island.

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Resource Planner to join the innovative Policy and Planning team at Environment Southland.

Reporting to the Policy & Planning Manager, you'll focus on planning and policy development as well as ensuring community involvement in the development and review of the organisation's resource management policies and plans.  Your primary focus will be working on the planning component for Council's Water and Land 2020 & Beyond project.

Water and Land 2020 & Beyond is a long term Council project that aims to prevent a decline in water quality and help the community to achieve its goals for water.

More specifically, some of your day-to-day duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Supporting the Policy and Planning Manager in leading the policy team;
  • Developing effective regional plans and the Regional Policy Statement;
  • Contributing to the development of national policies and strategies; 
  • Providing policy advice and analysis to Council, Committees and Executive Management;
  • Assisting with ensuring that the division's annual work programmes are prepared and delivered; and
  • Providing technical reports to Council and the community.

To be considered, you will hold a relevant tertiary qualifications along with extensive experience in resource planning and/or environmental management.  In addition, you will have full membership with the New Zealand Planning Institute.  Your initial focus will be on the Water & Land 2020 & Beyond project so it would be ideal if your policy and planning experience included some exposure to water policy planning.  

Your extensive experience and professional memberships will ensure your ability to produce useful resource management or environmental planning outputs and advice within a defined time and cost and to a high professional standard.

Importantly, you will have thorough knowledge and understanding of planning and plan development processes as well as relevant legislation.  You will be liaising with a broad range of stakeholders so excellent communicative ability, including the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people will be essential to your success.
