In partnership with the Southland Community, Environment Southland is the statutory body responsible for managing the natural and physical resources of air, land, water and coast within the local region.  Environment Southland is responsible for managing the entire Southland region, which covers over three million hectares from Awarua Point on the West Coast to Waiparau Head on the fringe of the East Coast and includes Stewart Island.

About the Opportunity

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Catchment Works Supervisor (Engineer) to join Environment Southland's Catchment Management Team in Invercargill.

Reporting to the Manager (Catchment Management) this role will be responsible for managing and coordinating the service functions of the Council's river management and land drainage operations, in accordance with best practice and agreed community standards, to avoid or minimise potential flood risks to the community.

This role has five direct reports, as well as responsibility for contractors and/or consultants engaged to carry out works on river management and land drainage coordination.

More specifically, some of your day-to-day duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Providing leadership, support and training to staff managing river protection works and sustainable gravel extraction;
  • Coordinating the management of community drainage outfall maintenance schemes and projects, including budgeting and compliance;
  • Actively communicating with community members, individuals and stakeholders seeking information and advice;
  • Reviewing existing practices for river management and drainage outfall maintenance;
  • Undertaking engineering, legal and resource investigation surveys as required;
  • Developing and implementing codes of practice with stakeholders;
  • Ensuring all activities comply with relevant legislation, regulation, policies and procedures; and
  • Providing technical reports to Council and the community.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced and innovative engineering professional who's passionate about natural resources to step into a role with real potential for progression into management.

The ideal applicant will hold tertiary qualifications in civil engineering or similar, and have good knowledge and understand of river processes, hydraulics and hydrology — along with solid leadership experience. You'll have proven management skills, enabling you to effectively oversee projects, coordinate tasks and duties and develop a high performing team. Excellent planning skills are paramount to this, and you must be able to assess projects to accurately determine schedules / timeframes, level of difficulty and resources required, as well as measure performance.

Environment Southland is seeking applications from results-oriented individuals with excellent organisation skills and the demonstrated ability to seek out and implement innovative improvements to processes and Council services. You'll have excellent time management skills as well as the initiative and problem-solving skills to adapt to change and manage competing priorities. Most importantly, you'll be an excellent communicator, with the interpersonal skills to build relationships and liaise confidently with internal and external stakeholders, including community members and government departments.

This is truly a role with plenty of variety, and initially around 50% of your work will be conducted in the field; therefore applicants should have a true love of the outdoors.

Please note: A current unrestricted driver's licence is a requirement of this position.
