About the Organisation

The Central Australian Remote Health Development Service (CARHDS) was established to develop the capacity of Aboriginal people and health professionals to improve health outcomes and to increase effective Aboriginal control over Primary Health Care service delivery.

CARHDS is a unique service as it is directly controlled by and accountable to the Primary Health Care industry to meet the training and development needs as determined by remote health clinics. There are numerous Aboriginal Community Controlled services in Australia, plus state and territory government services. CARHDS will be working across both sectors to develop and grow the capacity of Aboriginal people to take charge of their own health centres and clinics.

To achieve its goals, CARHDS has a primary focus on providing remote support in order to improve access to, and equity in, the provision of in-service training and development for AHW/Ps and Boards, with a particular emphasis upon health and governance literacy.

About Alice Springs

Alice Springs is Australia's Oasis, the capital of the Outback and the most romantic country town in the world. It's where the Arrernte Aboriginal tribal group have lived for 40,000 years and where pioneer men and women gave "tough" a new meaning. It's where they race camels, hold hilarious holiday regattas in dry river beds and where Peter Finch finally caught up with Virginia McKenna in the 1956 film classic "A Town Like Alice".

Not just for tourists, Alice Springs provides residents with a modern, well-facilitated setting, and as the second largest city in the NT, boasts plenty of retail, educational, health, community, cultural and sporting facilities.

Alice Springs is 2.5 hours away from any beach in Australia and is easy to travel to and from. It is also a great place to start when visiting the sights of the outback!

Living in Alice Springs is a dramatic change from the usual lifestyle anywhere else in Australia; the events and festivals, and outback and tourist attractions and the Indigenous culture ensure this area remains unique.
