About the Organisation

The Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) was established over 25 years ago in Burketown to represent the rights and interests of Traditional Owners.  They are the recognised native title service body for the southern Gulf region with members drawn from the nine language groups from that area.

In 2011 the CLCAC established a Business and Economic Development Program. The program is building on current initiatives, like the Land and Sea Management Program and successful native title determinations, driving new economic development opportunities that will contribute to improved social and community development outcomes.

About the Opportunity

Carpentaria Land Council Aboriginal Corporation (CLCAC) has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Economic Development Officer to join their team in Cairns.

In this pivotal role, you will be working closely with the CEO and the Board of Directors to identify and implement key business and economic development projects and initiatives. This is a full time role until 30 June 2015, with possible extension (subject to funding).

More specifically, your duties will include:

  • Providing business and strategic planning support and guidance to Prescribed Body Corporates;
  • Pursuing opportunities for existing and new small-scale businesses; 
  • Assisting stakeholders with business planning and development processes, as well as with approval and start-up processes;
  • Developing extension and communication materials and programs to support Business Development; and
  • Establishing and maintaining relationships and partnerships between Government, key regional groups and Prescribed Body Corporates.

To be successful in this position, you'll have extensive business management or economic development experience, as well as experience in securing grants and raising capital. You will have relevant qualifications in Commerce, Business or Economics or similar.

CLCAC is seeking a driven individual with a commitment to identify and facilitate investment and development opportunities, with demonstrated strategic planning and project management skills. Your excellent interpersonal skills will enable you to relate effectively in a cross-cultural environment, while your highly developed communication skills will enable you to facilitate forums, write high quality reports and create grant applications. Importantly, your ability to build and maintain strong relationships and networks is essential in this role.

In addition, the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively will be key to your success. Although not essential, candidates with prior experience working with Traditional Owner groups will be viewed favourably.

The successful candidate will be required to travel to and from the Gulf of Carpentaria region and within the region.
