About the Opportunity

The Aboriginal Best Start Program is an exciting new service being implemented in the Greater Dandenong and Casey Municipalities. The project will develop and implement a range of initiatives that focus on understanding the health, education, development and well being needs of Aboriginal children 0-8 yrs of age, their families and their community. The Best Start Program will identify the range of resources and services currently being provided and will seek better co-ordination to make services more accessible and sensitive to the Aboriginal community.

Due to this exciting new program, Dandenong and District Aborigines Co-Operative Ltd is seeking an Aboriginal Best Start Community Facilitator to facilitate the service within the Dandenong and Casey Municipalities.

In this rewarding position, you will be responsible for the co-ordination, facilitation, and implementation of the project by developing a range of activities, programs and initiatives in the community.

Some of your day-to-day duties will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Developing and coordinating the successful implementation of strategies in relation to the key objectives of the program;
  • Facilitating the engagement and continued involvement of all parents, Elders and care providers of Aboriginal children in the Project;
  • Liaising and collaborating with other existing Aboriginal Best Start Projects;
  • Consulting closely with the Indigenous and general communities as well as other key stakeholders;
  • Actively developing, supporting and fostering networks within the local Aboriginal community & supporting community advocacy; and
  • Monitoring and reporting on the achievements and outcomes of the Best Start action plan.

To be successful in this role, you must have a sound knowledge of and commitment to Koorie culture and Koorie community needs. Additionally, you will have demonstrated experience in the development, delivery and evaluation of community education and development projects as well as knowledge and understanding of early childhood development and current legislation.

The role will require a great deal of interaction with many varied stakeholders, therefore the successful applicant will demonstrate high-level negotiation, communication and interpersonal skills. Most importantly, you will be able to enhance and maintain effective communication with Indigenous communities, government departments and other community based organisations. You will also display the ability to prepare various reports, briefing papers and other submissions.

A current Victorian drivers licence is essential, and the successful applicant will be required to undergo a Working with Children check and police check.
