The Barkly Regional Council was formed on 1st July 2008 and accepted responsibility for local government in the region formerly managed by various smaller Community Government Councils including the Tennant Creek Town Council. Since its formation the Council has undergoing consolidation and determination of its strategic goals and objectives. About the Region

The Barkly region covers an area 323,514km2 , 42% larger than Victoria and the second largest local government area in the world with a resident population of 8,137 (ABS – NT at a Glance 2011). Victoria is considered the second most populous Australian state with a density of 2,431 persons per one hundred square kilometres compared to the Barkly Region with its 2 persons in the same area. The council stretches from the Queensland border over 620 kilometres to west of the Stuart Highway and from north of Elliott 570 kilometres southwards on each side of the Stuart Highway to Barrow Creek. The largest town in the region is Tennant Creek located on the Stuart Highway approximately 1,000 kilometres south of Darwin and 500 kilometres north of Alice Springs.

About the Opportunity

Barkly Regional Council has an exciting opportunity for a proactive and experienced individual to take the position of Council Depot Manager based in Tennant Creek, NT.

Reporting to the Executive Director (Operations), you'll be responsible for the management and operations of all Council depots in the local region. This will involve future capability and budgetary planning, as well as developing close partnerships with community coordinators to ensure Council commitments are fulfilled without disruption.

More specifically, your key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Managing the procurement and maintenance of Council plant and machinery across Council depots, ensuring availability of these resources at all times;
  • Identifying methods to optimise use of Council assets;
  • Scheduling and undertaking preventative maintenance activities;
  • Managing depot stores and procurement/purchases;
  • Aiding in the recruitment, training and development of depot staff;
  • Developing and monitoring the depot budget; and
  • Liaising with contractors and third-parties.

To be considered, it is imperative that you have extensive managerial experience in a large workshop environment. Your previous experience in a leadership position will ensure you're always looking to develop, support and train your team, while also seeing you effectively coordinate work schedules and projects across a multifaceted workshop. Importantly, you'll have previous experience working in a remote environment and have a strong understanding of and appreciation for Indigenous culture.

Barkly Regional Council is seeking applications from managers with proven skills in planning, prioritising and delegating work and meeting designated timeframes. You'll be solutions-focused and show a great deal of initiative when responding to changing circumstances to make sound decisions. A highly flexible nature and positive attitude is key to your success in this.

As the Council Depot Manager, you'll be liaising with people of all levels within this diverse organisation, as well as external stakeholders, contractors and vendors. You'll therefore need to be professional, personable and have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Computer literacy is also essential, particularly with regard to the Microsoft Office Suite.

Please note, a current manual driver's licence is an essential requirement as this position, as is the completion of a 4WD training course (or willingness to undertake). Candidates with a HR licence will be viewed favourably.
