About the Organisation

Katherine Women’s Crisis Centre (KWCC) is a not for profit organisation based in Katherine, NT that runs a range of programs aimed at addressing the issues arising out of family and/or domestic violence and supporting people in a crisis situation.

Residential accommodation is offered to these families on a temporary basis while assessment is carried out and appropriate support is identified and provided. To complement the services offered through the Centre in Katherine, support is provided to families living in remote communities, as part of a community outreach program.

Gunbalanya (also known as Oenpelli) is an Aboriginal community in West Arnhem Land, NT - just 60km from the town of Jabiru, and 300km east of Darwin. As part of Arnhem Land, and on the outskirts of Kakadu National Park, the region offers an abundance of experiences, boasting many natural attractions while providing a diverse outdoor and outback lifestyle for its residents.

Gunbalanya is a naturally stunning part of the Top End, with Australia's most beautiful wetlands attracting tourists from around the world! About the Opportunity

If you're dedicated to providing safe and secure supported accommodation to women and children affected by domestic violence, Katherine Women's Crisis Centre (KWCC) has an opportunity for a full time Safe House Coordinator to join their team in West Arnhem Land, NT.

The new Gunbalanya Safe House will provide secure crisis accommodation for women and accompanying children from all families/clans needing to escape violence, or the threat of violence, until their immediate safety issues have been resolved. This newly-created role presents the opportunity to work with the local Gunbalanya community to establish and operate a new Safe House, bringing a new level of domestic / family violence support to the area.

As Safe House Coordinator, you'll be in charge of overseeing staff, physical resources and relevant policies and legislation to ensure that the Safe House provides high quality services that reflect the needs of the local community.

Reporting to the Executive Officer based in Katherine, your more specific duties will include:

  • Establishing the Safe House service, including recruitment of appropriate staff;
  • Providing coordination, supervision, training and mentoring opportunities for staff;
  • Building strong links with Aboriginal groups and stakeholders in the Gunbalanya community;
  • Identifying and implementing strategies that facilitate integrated services and access for all family/clan groups and organisations;
  • Developing Safety Plans for women and children returning to their community from the Safe House;
  • Establishing referral procedures, in consultation with key referral agencies (police, health clinic and night patrol);
  • Undertaking and coordinating relevant community awareness, education and development projects; and
  • Ensuring that the Gunbalanya Safe House meets all funding requirements, milestones and timelines.

This challenging and rewarding role requires an experienced Manager from the community services sector, with a demonstrated understanding of domestic / family violence and its effects on women and children. You'll have qualifications in Social Work, Community Services, Community Development or similar, and display a commitment to women's issues and gender equity. It's vital you understand and promote KWCC's mission, purpose and values, adhering to the KWCC Code of Conduct at all times.

As the leader of this new service, you'll bring an understanding of Aboriginal culture, and the creativity to ensure that community awareness measures surrounding domestic / family violence and sexual abuse fit appropriately in the local culture. You'll be a team player with a proven background in successfully planning, organising and coordinating staff and service delivery, and strong communication skills, allowing you to network and build meaningful relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.

It's important you have the ability to frequently travel to remote areas, hold a current manual driver's licence, and be willing to train in 4WD driving. As the role involves working with children, applicants should have, or be willing to obtain a Working With Children check and will be required to undergo a Criminal History check.
