About Normanton

Normanton is a delightful town with an excess of old world charm. Located 681 km west of Cairns and approx. 785 km west of Townsville, it started life as a port for the Gulf of Carpentaria's cattle industry and grew in importance with the discovery of gold at Croydon in 1885.  Just south of the Gulf of Carpentaria, on the banks of the Norman River, Normanton has a population of 1,100, 60% of whom are Indigenous Australians.

Normanton has an airport, school (to Year 10), sports centre, golf course, bowling green, gun club, racecourse, rodeo ground and an aerodrome, as well as a public library and visitor information service located in the historic Burns Philp Building.
