About the Organisation

Established in 1930, the Ricegrowers' Association of Australia (RGA) turned a small group of pioneering rice growers into an effective and cohesive force. Any rice producer, their family members, and/or Ricegrowers’ Limited shareholder is eligible for membership of the RGA. The RGA represents more than 1500 voluntary members in the main rice growing areas of New South Wales and Victoria, with headquarters in Leeton NSW, and supports growers on issues affecting the viability of their business and communities.

With eight branches across Yanco, Mirrool, Coleambally, Berriquin, Deniliquin, Wakool, Hay and Victoria, growers have a chance to talk about issues that affect them, as well as to network with their colleagues and RGA staff.

The RGA's role is advocacy & lobbying, providing services to rice growers and public relations & education.

Leeton is a small country town in the Griffith area of New South Wales. It is one of Australia's richest food-producing areas, with citrus, rice, grape and wheat farms scattered throughout the Leeton Shire. It was the first town to be established as part of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area and has a population of over 12,000 people.

Leeton is Australia's Rice Capital and is home to the headquarters of the Ricegrowers’ Association of Australia, along with processing and marketing company SunRice. 

About the Opportunity

Ricegrowers' Association of Australia has an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to take the position of Executive Director based in Leeton, NSW.  The RGA is looking for a strategic and creative leader with high levels of emotional intelligence and maturity in dealing with people from all levels of the organisation.

The scope of your work will include providing successful leadership and management of the organisation and will be responsible for the day-to-day running of the RGA, including the supervision of all aspects of RGA’s administration, finance, governance, the management of four staff members, and the contracting and management of project consultants and staff.  

More specifically, your key responsibilities will include (but not be limited to):

  • Building relationships and collaborating with staff and the Central Executive group;
  • Servicing members and managing the process of attracting new members;
  • Assuming overall responsibility for the RGA's public relations activities, communications strategies and stakeholder relations;
  • Managing the RGA’s policy portfolio in conjunction with the Policy Manager in the key areas of water security and access, research, development and extension, rural affairs and environment;
  • Identifying and seeking out opportunities for the RGA to obtain external funding to undertake programs of benefit to Australian rice growers; and
  • Managing and reporting on a range of externally funded projects and programs.

To be considered, you'll have tertiary qualifications or relevant experience in Agriculture, Natural Resource Management, Economics or related disciplines. Though not essential, an agricultural background will be advantageous. A demonstrated understanding of policy development, stakeholder engagement & communications, coupled with your experience in financial and project management will be the stepping stone to your success in this highly supportive leadership role.

Importantly, you'll have strong stakeholder engagement skills and a background in management of an industry association or membership-based organisation.  Outstanding written communication and presentation skills are also essential as is competency with business technology and software.  

You'll be skilled in issues management that provides a positive outcome for the industry.  In addition, your strong communication and leadership ability will ensure that you are able to liaise at the executive and board level as well as develop and performance manage your team in an effective and consistent manner. An understanding of contemporary Human Resource Management practices and policies is desirable, for your success in this role.

While not essential, candidates with relevant Degree level qualifications will be highly regarded and appropriate for this senior management role.

Travel required will be by the Association-provided car, often over long distances.
