About the Organisation

The Ampilatwatja Health Centre Aboriginal Corporation (AHCAC) is an Aboriginal community controlled health service located off the Sandover Highway some 350 kms NE of Alice Springs. Traditional culture is very strong and the community is governed by the traditional owners.

The Ampilatwatja Health Centre Aboriginal Corporation is a primary health care service, which also provides a 24-hour emergency service and is accessible to residents from Ampilatwatja, Irrultja, Atnwengerrp and Welere and other peoples passing through the region. The Health Centre provides primary health care service to approximately 650 people who live in the region.

There are three out-stations, with the main ones being Irrultja and Atnwengerrp located approximately 60kms and 20kms respectively from Ampilatwatja. The people of Ampilatwatja form part of the Alywarr nation with the local Aboriginal language being spoken by the majority of the community.

About the Opportunity

The Ampilatwatja Health Centre Aboriginal Corporation has an opportunity for a Chief Executive Officer (Remote Health Service) to join their team of dedicated health professionals working across the Ampilatwatja community.

Working closely with the Board, this role will be responsible for the efficient management and administration of all aspects of the Health Centre's operation to ensure high quality service delivery to the community.

 More specifically, your duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Managing service delivery that is timely and within budget;
  • Ensuring effective operation on a day-to-day basis;
  • Managing staff, including doctors, nurses and other health workers;
  • Meeting with and reporting to the Board on a regular basis;
  • Undertaking the financial administration of the Centre, including liaising with funding providers;
  • Progressing the development, implementation and evaluation of the Centre's agreed regional model of health service;
  • Collaborating with the local peoples regarding the current and future requirements for community services; and
  • Developing continuous quality improvement activities.

This position will also be required to participate in a shared after-hours on-call emergency roster so a flexible approach will be required.

AHCAC is looking for an experienced Registered Nurse with registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulatory Agency (AHPRA). This will be coupled with experience in health management (including financial management) and the supervision of staff. A background in Aboriginal Primary Health and a demonstrated understanding of the principles of primary health care and their application in a remote setting will be essential to your success. While not essential, tertiary qualifications in management and experience in clinical/medical practice management will be highly regarded.

Applicants will posses demonstrated experience in working with a Board and an understanding of governance requirements in the Aboriginal community-controlled sector. Experience in managing a small primary health care clinic in a remote setting is also desirable.

Highly developed cross-cultural communication skills and a willingness to take cultural advice from Aboriginal staff and Board members will be necessary, as will your ability to keep a cool head under pressure. You will be confident in analytical thinking and in making informed decisions in a remote location.

Leading by example, you will be consultative and open-minded in your approach and will roll up your sleeves to get tasks done. Additionally, you will have well-developed report writing skills, sound computer skills and experience with patient database systems, supported by your excellent written and verbal communication skills.

In this role, a current manual NT driver's licence (or ability to obtain one) and the ability to drive a manual vehicle is essential. Experience in off-road driving or willingness to undertake such training is advantageous as well.

A current Ochre Card (Working With Children Clearance), or Temporary Exemption Notice, is required before commencing in this role.
