About Council and the Region

Richmond Shire Council was established in 1916 and first known as Wyangarie Shire Council. Richmond is situated half way between Townsville and Mount Isa on the Flinders Highway. Its main industries including agriculture, tourism and some mining. 

Richmond is most famous for its fossils and its world renowned museum Kronosaurus Korner. With a population of 1,000 in the Shire covering 26,000sq km the town of Richmond is the central service centre.

The town itself features a man made lake known as Lake Fred Tritton, named after the late Fred Tritton and former Mayor. The lake offers a range of recreational activities including skiing, fishing and swimming.

About the Opportunity

Richmond Shire Council has a fantastic opportunity for a full time Workplace Health and Safety Officer to join its dedicated team in Richmond, QLD.

Reporting to the Director of Works you will be responsible for developing, implementing and promoting effective Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) systems and return to work programs. Additionally, you'll be responsible for assisting with the management of the environmental and cultural heritage issues faced by Richmond Shire Council.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Providing guidance, advice, and assistance to management, supervisors, and employees on WHS matters;
  • Developing the capabilities of the WHS Representatives;
  • Assisting in the compiling of risk management activities and reports;
  • Assisting stakeholders with the WHS inspection programme;
  • Investigating, or assisting in the investigation of, WHS incidents; and
  • Assisting in the external auditing of the WHS Management System and implementing changes as appropriate.

Richmond Shire Council is seeking applications from individuals with a demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining WHS management systems, ideally in a civil construction environment. You will have experience in performing risk assessments and investigating WHS incidents and will have sound knowledge of relevant WHS legislation across local, state and federal levels.

The role requires a demonstrated ability to achieve results and implement strategic direction across the organisation, as well as the capacity to deliver training to employees. Well developed analytical skills and the ability to develop practical solutions are also essential.

You'll need well developed interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to liaise with a wide variety of employees, alongside the ability to prepare correspondence and reports as required. Computer literacy is a must. Although not essential, previous experience within Local Government will be highly regarded, as would a Certificate IV in both Occupational Heal and Safety and Workplace Training and Assessment, although these are not essential.

A current class C drivers licence is a requirement of this role, as is a current White Card.
