The Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council's (OLALC) focus is on Land regeneration, disability, homelessness, employment, training and biodiversity. These are the pillars on which they hope to build stronger communities and a sustainable council. OLALC has seen huge growth in the organisation over the past five years, now employing up to 30 people in new programs extending its reach into the Orange community and beyond. As a part of building community strength the Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council is also furthering their work in homelessness services to the broader community.

About the Opportunity

The Orange Local Aboriginal Land Council has a rewarding opportunity for a compassionate, dedicated Child Support Worker to join their team in Bathurst, NSW.

In this role you will be responsible for providing a range of support, advocacy, and referral services to women and children experiencing homelessness and or family and domestic violence. Additionally, you will be responsible for providing support services for children and families affected by mental health or substance use issues. The focus of this role is primarily on the needs of the children, while assisting the parent/caregiver using a holistic approach to families.

Your key responsibilities will include, but may not be limited to:

  • Assisting children to overcome the impact of having witnessed domestic and family violence or impacts of homelessness;
  • Providing parental support and education to mothers;
  • Assisting refuge workers to best support children living in the accommodation and support service;
  • Ensuring the service meets the needs of individual children and young people;
  • Providing appropriate referrals to services to ensure child’s needs are met; and
  • Assisting in developing and delivering workshops and groups.

To be considered for this role you will possess qualifications in Welfare, Social Science, Education or a related discipline. You'll be able to demonstrate experience working with children and families experiencing domestic violence and who are experiencing or are at risk of homelessness. Prior experience in designing, implementing and evaluating programs covering these issues are needed as well. You'll have previous experience in case management planning and practice, and experience working within a refuge setting. An understanding of the "Going Home Staying Home" reforms would be ideal, but is not essential. 

You will have the demonstrated ability to work and engage with families from diverse backgrounds and cultures as you work in partnership with them to achieve their goals and address child safety concerns using a variety of intervention strategies. 

Importantly, you will also have an understanding of child protection issues, issues facing vulnerable families, the importance of children's early years on later outcomes, children's developmental stages and practical parenting skills, mental health and domestic violence issues.  

In addition, you will demonstrate excellent communication, interpersonal and computer skills with a proven ability to use your initiative and work independently.  You must also have the ability to plan, implement and evaluate groups and will have strong knowledge of working with families from a strength based, child focused perspective.

A current driver's licence is required for this role.
