About the Opportunity

Nganampa Health Council has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated Mental Health Nurse to join their team. There is a strong preference for the position to be based on the APY Lands although basing the position in Alice Springs with regular travel to the APY lands is a possibility.

Working in a largely autonomous position, you'll be providing mental health intervention, consultancy and liaison to patients with a mental illness on the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara Lands.

Clinical work will be a large feature of this hands-on role, thus you must be confident putting your advanced skills into action on a regular basis.

Some of your more specific responsibilities will include (but will not be limited to):

  • Providing clinical services on referral and case coordination where appropriate, together with consultancy and guidance to clinic staff;
  • Providing mental health services within the framework of an integrated primary health care service, utilising a multidisciplinary approach, and promoting and implementing coordinated care for clients;
  • Providing assessment and crisis intervention services, treatment and case management in consultation with Nganampa Health Council Medical Officers and consultant psychiatrists;
  • Coordinating and participating in psychiatrist visits;
  • Orientation, clinical education, upskilling, mentoring, and other support to registered nurses and Aboriginal Health Workers;
  • Assisting in the ongoing collection of program data and evaluation of mental health services; and
  • Participating in the development of mental health services and programs, contributing to the development and review of policies and protocols.

This position requires an independent and self-reliant Registered Nurse with postgraduate qualifications in Mental Health, in addition to significant experience working as an advanced Mental Health Practitioner. You'll be confident in managing your time effectively as you travel to and from communities, putting your working knowledge of contemporary mental health service delivery and primary health care into practice.

In addition, you'll be adaptable and flexible in the role, with the ability to display initiative, discretion and cultural sensitivity. Importantly, you will be hands-on in your work style and excited by the prospect of taking on a true outback position, from changing tyres on your 4WD to providing sensitive one-on-one care to clients.

The successful individual must be able to communicate and participate effectively within a cross-cultural, multi-disciplinary health team, with an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal Health and relevant mental health legislation being essential.

Candidates who are open to change, accepting of Aboriginal people, comfortable living in a remote environment and who are willing to learn the ways of the people will be best suited to this position. The ability to work under Aboriginal management and control will be highly regarded. No two days will be the same and as a result, highly resourceful candidates will thrive here.

The successful candidate must be willing to undergo a Police Check. A manual driver's licence is required for this position. A 2 day 4WD training course is provided in your orientation week.
