Servicing over 17,900 customers across an area of 300 square kilometres on Phillip Island and the mainland, Westernport Water provides water and wastewater products and services to properties and communities.

Westernport Water has a diversified water supply with water sourced from the catchment supplying the Candowie Reservoir via Tennant Creek, the Bass River, ground water bores from the Corinella Aquifer and a connection to the Melbourne Water Supply. The company supplies wastewater services to 90 per cent of properties that receive water.

Westernport Water has two wastewater treatment plants, the Cowes Wastewater Treatment Plant and the King Road Wastewater Treatment Plant, which process 1100 megalitres (ML) of domestic wastewater each year, and is one of 19 water businesses operating in Victoria.

About the Opportunity 

Westernport Water has a fantastic opportunity for a Water / Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator to join their professional team. This role is based at Candowie Reservoir in Almurta, VIC, although there will be some visits required to the organisation's Newhaven and Cowes sites on Phillip island, when required.

Reporting to the Water/Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager, in this role you will be responsible for the operation of Westernport Water’s treatment facilities including water, wastewater, disinfection, recycled water and other ancillary treatment systems. Additionally, you will be responsible for leading and managing a small team in delivering water and wastewater treatment services.

More specifically, some of your key duties will include (but not be limited to):

  • Undertaking efficient and effective operation of the treatment facility and other ancillary systems;
  • Assisting in investigating and resolving any reported incidents or hazards and providing recommendations for resolving them;
  • Providing input into ongoing performance management and process improvements;
  • Monitoring the accuracy, quality, timeliness and completeness of data collected for Regulatory, Board and other corporate reports;
  • Providing input into the ongoing development of the Water Quality Risk Management Plan; and 
  • Assisting in ensuring documentation on treatment processes and procedures are up-to-date.

To be considered, you must hold a Certificate III in Water Industry Operations or equivalent, and substantial experience in operating a water or wastewater treatment facility. Though not essential, familiarity with land, crop or stock management practices will be highly advantageous in this role. An understanding and familiarity with the proceedings in the water industry will be key to your success. You will be be able to demonstrate significant experience in water treatment with substantial experience in a senior water treatment plant operator role.

You will have a thorough understanding of the principles, systems, processes and procedures required to effectively and efficiently operate water, wastewater and other ancillary systems. Additionally you will have an understanding of the implications of all relevant legislation and regulations applicable to treatment facilities in the Water Industry including EPA licences, the Safe Drinking Water Act and the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines. You'll have considerable experience with sampling, analytical and laboratory testing, as well as well developed skills in safety awareness, risk assessments and implementing risk mitigation actions.

A self-motivated, driven and highly organised professional, you'll be able to effectively manage your time and balance competing priorities effectively. Your advanced interpersonal, communication and networking skills will be important to effectively work in a team environment to maximise effectiveness and efficiency. 

Importantly, you'll consider yourself to be a natural leader and will be able to demonstrate your experience in supervising and directing the work of a small team of staff, as well as the work of contractors. 

In this role you'll need to have a current manual Victorian driver's licence prior to commencement in this role.
